The issue of who gets selected depends on the combination of the coach how good the kids are. McDermott certainly tended to go for the old hands at the drop of a hat, but if a new coach was given the job of rebuilding the side over say two or three years they might be far more willing to give kids a go - not to mention if they're completely new to the club they would have no particular connection to JJB or anyone else and would presumably judge players on merit.
That's what Graham Murray did, several got replaced and where out of favor, pure performance was what mattered, Barrie mac could not get a gig for first year under Murray as his performances where not up to scratch. the likes of Tony kemp graham Holroyd where moved on.
