Different rules : Sat Mar 30, 2024 6:34 am
so no arguing from me Saints and Wigan are currently lightyears ahead of the rest of Super League , but despite sky's effort to make yesterdays game the match of the century it was actually boring and ruined by Chris Kendal playing different rules on the six again . I am not joking when i say at least 50 tackles in that game would have been penalised in nearly any other game for laying on (i actually take my hat of to Liam Farrell for being the greatest ever spoiler at the play the ball in history , he makes Paul McShane look like an amateur ) and it slowed the game down so much that defences were set at nearly every play the ball . So with all that and the fact he was very liberal with the offside rule then we were treated to a boring 80 minutes instead of an all action game.

The ruck is still a mess throughout the comp, but the ref's idea of 'letting the game flow' is to just let teams do whatever they want.
The 6 again rule is a great idea, but the ref's barely use it, which when you consider the amount of penalties that used to be given for interference before it was introduced seems odd to me, because the amount of over wrestling and messing around has only increased IMO.
The ball carriers are not without blame either. The amount of trapping in and moving off the mark is still ridiculous. Take the penalty against Bentley in the first few minutes of the Cas game as an example, the Cas player moves off the mark as he's about to play the ball, and essentially puts Bentley in an illegal position.

The Saints/Wigan game was played at an intensity that we should want all our games to be played at, but we also need to referee the game the game in a way that encourages attacking skill to flourish. Bevan's try was great, but it was the only moment of high level attacking skill in the 80 minutes, which when you consider the amount of quality attacking players on the pitch, is not what we should be aiming for as a sport/entertainment product.

It also does sound a bit of a virtue crusade when we start complaining about the rules and the reffing. If you are good enough you simply adapt to these things, not expect them to adapt to what you want. They are not going to change and it’s foolish basing your tactics on that. Sport has always been thus. My old football coach used to say ‘the referee is right, even when he’s wrong!’

It is not about that , it is about making the game more entertaining , watch the Aussie games and see the ruck and play the ball and note the way it is reffed . Saints and Wigan will still be the best sides but will produce better games , that yesterday was hard enough to watch as an R.L fan never mind a casual watcher
