As I see it we had 2 options,
Stick by him (which would have been what I did)
Or
Let him serve a ban play him for a year and look to sell him.
Releasing him for free to a direct rival is ridiculous, the most stupid decision the club has ever done in my lifetime and if rumors are to be believed it’s a big part of why Steve gill has lost his job.

For a guy who has had an 'incident' every single season since 2013 then making a 3 year plan like the ones you've listed isn't very wise. If he could continually get into bother when he had the focus of RL then what could happen with two years without it you can only imagine....perhaps maybe that's already started to show in the last 5 months and has influenced Cas' decision?
You ask who you'll find to replace him which yes it will be tough but it'll be even tougher if you're only signing them for a season or sowith the intention of giving the FB shirt straight back to Hardaker.
This allows Cas to move onwards from this and start making plans for 2019 and further ahead now instead of having a question mark over a key position and your cap space for a couple of years.
And again honestly what transfer fee do you think you could get for him? Doubt it'll be anywhere near the 150k so best cut your losses.
