As I see it we had 2 options,

Stick by him (which would have been what I did)

Or

Let him serve a ban play him for a year and look to sell him.

Releasing him for free to a direct rival is ridiculous, the most stupid decision the club has ever done in my lifetime and if rumors are to be believed it’s a big part of why Steve gill has lost his job.

For a guy who has had an 'incident' every single season since 2013 then making a 3 year plan like the ones you've listed isn't very wise. If he could continually get into bother when he had the focus of RL then what could happen with two years without it you can only imagine....perhaps maybe that's already started to show in the last 5 months and has influenced Cas' decision?

You ask who you'll find to replace him which yes it will be tough but it'll be even tougher if you're only signing them for a season or sowith the intention of giving the FB shirt straight back to Hardaker.

This allows Cas to move onwards from this and start making plans for 2019 and further ahead now instead of having a question mark over a key position and your cap space for a couple of years.

And again honestly what transfer fee do you think you could get for him? Doubt it'll be anywhere near the 150k so best cut your losses.

Releasing a player we can’t replace for free to a direct rival isn’t cutting your losses, it’s bordering on retarded

Again, what fee do you think you'd get for him?

And you can replace him. He's a good player but he isn't irreplaceable. Leeds won a GF the season they released him with an 18 year old who was only playing in his 12th game.

I’m of the opinion sticking by him would outweigh any fee we could gather however certainly after a year like last year there would be no lack of interest. As his signing for Wigan proves (when it gets released)

Have you factored in the cost of paying him for those 2 years (as is expected by most) that he wouldn't be playing, regardless of the faux job on minimum wage for the cleaning company, cas will still have been paying his full salary, which over 2 years will have been somewhere in the region of the £150k you reckon cas has lost. No matter how you look at it, cas would be £150k out of pocket, but have had their best season ever with gates up LLS and relative prize money, I don't think cas are out of pocket at all.
As for going free to Wigan, nothing confirmed as yet and a lot can happen between now and when the dadftarse gets to play his next game :thumb:

If he gets a two year ban, I suspect that by the time he is eligible to play he'll either be in prison or so reliant on cocaine that he won't be able to perform at anywhere near a decent level on the pitch.

He was always s going to end up at a club lacking a moral compass a la Wigan.

IF he has a year like 2017 when he returns to Rugby then teams would be interested but that's a massive IF after two years out and god knows how well he'll look after himself in that time given his track record. By the end of that first year he won't be far off turning 30 and that won't help with getting as big a fee as possible.

Wigan are interested now because it's not costing them anything to be and easy to wash their hands of it if it ends up with a 2 year ban. Won't have signed anything yet I suspect until confirmation of his ban length.

By all accounts, Hardaker has the mental capacity of a daft school kid. If he gets a two year ban I can't see a glittering career ahead of him, that's if he returns to the game at all.

I don't think for a minute he'll spend his two years on some sort of Rocky Balboa training regime, coming back to play top flight Super League with international honours. It'll be the usual story of signing for a lower Super League club for two years, going out on loan for the second year to another Super League club, a couple of hit and miss seasons with top Championship clubs, and finally ending up at Workington.

You're probably right, he'd slot in nicely at St's when Barba goes back home at the end of the season.
