catalan spend £200k more than everybody else : Mon Aug 20, 2018 4:55 pm
turns out catalan are spending 200k more than the other sl teams...due to the exchange rate, loophole

how is that fair in a salary capped sport?

you do wonder when you look down their playing roster how they have fitted them all in under the cap, now we know

joke the rfl havent sorted this out

Such a sensationalist headline. What are the RFL meant to do, predict the exchange rate fluctuation over a season?? Get real, this isnt some expansion conspiracy, just a bit of misfortune.

Ans if the exchange rate went the other way what then?. Tell Catalan to off load a player to balance the books.

Truth is, the salary cap is never going to be 100%, it doesnt take into account different costs of living, different tax rates, etc

The euro/pound exchange rate hasn’t been above or usually anywhere near €1.20 for a long time so using €1.45 is fair to all the other clubs ?

Is it fair to Leigh who were relegated by playing a club in a knockout match who were allowed to use the equivalent of £1.20+ to each £1 Leigh could use to fund their team.

Is it fair to Salford, Wakefield, Wigan and others who were fined and docked points for much smaller transgressions in the same period ?

Is it fair that Leeds are in the qualifiers when one club is either openly cheating or at best morally cheating at the behest of the RFL by using a long out of date exchange rate to ‘cook the books.’

The exchange rate on February 1st was €1.14 to the £1 which would have given Catalans so £1.9m x €1.14 is €2.166m. Surely the rate at the start of each season should be used or a capped rate at best of €1.20

At €1.45 x £1.9m is €2.755m a huge 27% increase in what they could spend and claim to be within the salary cap.

This is actually scandalous in a live salary capped game, the Catalans wouldn’t have had cap space to sign Drinkwater and Edwards the two big difference makers to their team the difference between top 8 and Wembley or a berth in the qualifiers.

Leigh should be promoted to an expanded Superleague next year and this nonsense stopped before the RFL goes beyond ridicule as if this is what happens on their watch it’s time someone else took over

The exchange rate is so bad because of Brexit, now Catalans get a lot of stick from the flatcappers, along with all expansion clubs, but I don’t see how they can be blamed for Brexit.

Catalans will have players on 2 and 3 year contracts paid in euros, they need to know their salary cap in Euro’s for 2 and 3 years ahead.

Do London play to the same salary cap? Given that the cost of living is 38% higher than in Hull..

Exactly.
There's some reactionary ill-informed bullshit on here and this is a classic example (and, presumably, the regular rubbish written about RL finance in League Express where I believe the story is from).

Players are signed to multi-year deals therefore the exchange rate has to be pegged over a period of time giving a stable Euro equivalent cap for Catalan to work to. You can't just change it every season at short notice.

No but as I stated €1.20 would have been more than fair €1.45 is not in scope at all over the last three years or more unless they have people on six year or more contracts.

Face it it’s ‘egg on the face time ‘ going by the theory above all SL clubs should get a rate boost if the £ loses against the $A if they pay the Aussies at the equivalent of their home currency.

Imagine 2+ extra players in your team would make a big difference......
