Actually, that is a rationalisation by him. Everyone knows that David Waite played for and was formerly a coach of, the St. George Dragons in Sydney. I believe that David just wanted to have a link with his past.

But in any case it has worked. Everyone likes the name Catalans Dragons.

So nothing to do with St George (Santa Jordi) being the patron Saint of the region then, who according to legend released a princess from the clutches of a DRAGON??

I would have thought that a well educated and well travelled individual such as yourself living in Carcassone and steeped in all things within this part of southern France northern Spain should have known about that connection?

Ah well at least David Waite had a 'lucky accident' when choosing the name Imagine if he had previously been coach of the Rabbitohs the people of Catalonia wouldn't have had a clue

I think you are both wrong and Jean is right. It's far more believable that the club just let the new coach pick the brand name on his own because he liked the one from his former club and that people in the area believed in dragons.
If Waite hadn't stepped in they could have been called Catalan Fairies at the bottom of the Garden
