2016 pre season : Sat Apr 21, 2018 11:26 am
think this was the beginning of the down fall

the infamous brett ferres saga in the off season when he was caught with hubys wife

https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/rugby-league/huddersfield-put-controversy-brett-ferres-7168724

we were already struggling for numbers squad wise and went into the season with a small squad, later that season we panic bought when struggling at the bottom and anderson ended up sacked.

it was also an unhappy camp, some backed ferres like brough.... and some backed huby, looking back i remember brough and huby arguing many times under the posts after a try, look what happened soon after huby left.. and took his castleford buddy with him in hooker kyle wood..they knew they left the sinking ship.

how we went into a season with this squad will never know! hincy at hooker

 Refresh your memory on Wiki on the Giants record for the last 20 years on the field and with coaches. The stuff you have here will not have helped anyone, but if you really think that's when Huddersfield problems started i would recommend giving your head a shake, and that's only the last 20 years, ( the period we have had money so to speak )

Yup and we still aren't giving new coaches a fair chance, due to crap halfbacks on long contracts. Stone was encumbered with Gaskell, now Woolford? will have both gaskell and Brough for another year and a half minimum!

There’s nothing anywhere that says a coach must play any player. If he doesn’t like then- don’t play them and they will have to warm the benches or look for another club. That’s what happened to brierley and Ellis with stone. The longer they are sat warming benches the less desirable they become to others...

Indeed- but currently only brough would be in a position to be able do that without jeopardising a future contract- and he’s certainly not the sort to be happy to warm the benches. Where would a player be if he doesn’t play for the next couple of years. Even if a champ side took him on he’d be part time. So yeah he’d earn a bit now- but then potentially absolutely nothing at all afterwards.
Like Ormsby- he went whilst he could still get a gig. Likely for a lot less- but it was either that or get nothing later.

yes stuck with what we have with some bad decisions being made on contracts.

maybe the new coach will give the likes of gaskell and rankin a big confidence boost and they can start to show their true colours... brough is an all together different case... may clash with woolford who himself seems a hothead! might be what we need

Sorry, but must disagree. There’s no way that squad, in normal circumstances, should have struggled in Superleague. It’s a comfortably top four squad.

There were two things that happened

The first you identify correctly. It happened, and maybe it could have been dealt with better. It brings to mind one thing I remember Alex Ferguson saying when asked if he had one piece of simple advice to share about team building - “Get rid of the cnuts”.

The second is different. The club had had three or four good seasons - in the league we’d been the most consistently successful team over the previous three years (add the tables together and we’d top it). But no trophies. All the talk at the time was whether the club could step up to the next level - and a lot of people were doubtful.

There are very few opportunities in rugby league to step onto a bigger stage, to reach for something magical, to create something big. To go back to Alex Ferguson - he once said that the thing that made the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end were “the big European nights under the floodlights at Old Trafford”

At the end of 2015 there was the chance to grab some of that. It was there in our grasp, but the club didn’t want to step up.

I still find it difficult to believe that there was a chance to host Huddersfield Giants vs Sydney Roosters and the club didn’t want to do it. More than that, the club were relieved to not step onto that stage - supported by many fans on this site.

The message that sent out to the entire RL world was that we are a small club that lack the balls to step up.

They didnt fight for that match (which was awarded to lower placed St Helens off the back of “commitment to the World Club Series) because it was too expensive.

And how much money has that timid, small minded decision cost now? Far in excess of the £185k the RFL wanted the club to invest.
