I know what you mean but I don't think it ruins them as a winger. At least I've seen no evidence of moving positions ruining a player that I can think of. Many moves work out really well. Hanley to loose forward, Jason Robinson to wing, Gary Connolly to centre are a few stand out examples. If we retain all 4 wingers I think someone is going to have to make a move. Certainly worth a try at the very least.
On Budgie to centre btw. I'm not sure it's a position you can just move to mid season and be expected to make a fist of so, like you say, I don't think it should be dismissed just yet.
If Manfredi comes back anything like the player he was, it would mean moving our two best wingers to to centres to accommodate two lesser wingers. Makes no sense. I can only think Wigan possibly think Manfredi is crocked or Burgess is on the move.
I would have sooner seen genuine depth in the centres otherwise with a new signing. Realistically John Bateman is never a centre, if anything game time there is hampering his development as a SR/13. This leaves two centres for two spots; Sarge and Gilly. Worthington and Brucie are yet well off. A seasoned centre would add so much to competition and cover.
When in comparison on the wings we have:
Burgess
Davies
Marshall
Manfredi (not ruling him out just yet)
Escare can cover wing if needs must (played there to point he was given the number 2 shirt)
All pushing for 2 spots.
