IL interview Wigan TV : Tue Sep 18, 2018 10:05 am
Really good interview with IL about the squad on wigan tv, he went though each position how in the squad for 2019.

Full back

Hardaker
Escare
Sarginson
Mullen

Wing

Manfredi
Burgess (back for preseason)
Marshall ( not as bad as first feared, 6-9 week injury rather than 6-9 months)
Davies

Centre

Sarge
Gildart
Hankinson
Mentioned burgess and manfredi can play centre

Halves

Williams
Woods
Tommy

Dropped a big hint we’ll be in for a 7. Lachlan Lam is staying in Sydney. Got to be Hastings.

Props

Clubb
Flower
Naverette
Hamlin
Bullock (described him as the best prop in the championship)
Partington
Byrne
Barnes

Didn’t mention Tautai ( maybe he just forgot)

Hookers

Powell
Ganson
Tommy if we get a 7

Backrow

Farrel
Greenwood
Isa
Wells (mentioned he’s had 2 ops on his broken foot, said he’ll be a big part of the plans for next year)
Kibula
Paisley.

Didn’t mention loose forward but do you really need to.

Squad depth does look good imo.

The players most at risk of being let go would probably be;

Escare
I like the lad a lot, his energy and speed can turn games but I wonder where he will fit in. Therefore for his sake it may be best he move on

Powell
Just not good enough to be a starter in a top SL to be brutally honest. I think he’s a decent hooker and can tackle well above his weight but long term I don’t think he’s a player we should be keeping hold of

Woods
Similar to Powell really in that from what I’ve seen of him at SL level, it just hasn’t been impressive and I don’t believe he is good enough for a top SL side. I’d like to add that I am more than happy to be proved wrong.

Tautai
I think we can all agree on this one.

I’ve said it on another thread but I would rather Drinkwater than another player with baggage in Hastings. Drinkwater and GW, IMO, would compliment each other rather well with GW beinf the creative off the cuff player and Drinkwater being the organiser. I’d rather that pairing that GW and TL personally.

SAINTS THE ORIGINAL AND PERENNIAL CHEATS

For sale full Saints kit (circa 1989). Shirts in pristine condition, but shorts badly soiled.

For 27 - 0 you get a trophy
For 75 - 0 you get sod all.

Wigan had eight in a row
Saints have five in a row

I was really pleased to see IL mention Liam Byrne, which suggests to me that he has now agreed a first team contract. He has only just turned 19 years of age, I'd love to see him go on to bigger and better things at Wigan.

It seems like every player in the league is off to Warrington. We really have not had the best out of TT. I can see why we signed him but he is suited to a more off the cuff style.
Are there any other youngsters moving up this year?

Escare to stay over Marshall for me.
Morgan can cover 1, 2/5, 6/7 and has even been spelled at 9. Marshall is 4th choice winger for me who I can't see making it in any other position. Sadly I'd say his value is below Escare.

id have him over Davies, Davies works hard out of our own line but so does everyone, Marshall has more pace also and his scoring record speaks for itself.

Few issues with that. Davies plays on the right, Marshall, for the most part the left. The left side is where the space and tries are, I'm willing to bet if Davies was on the left his try tally would be considerably higher. To add to this when Marshall played right wing he scored a grand total of zero tries, as he wasn't getting the time and space he was on the left. In the same spell Burgess was playing left and bagging the tries.

Secondly, there's far more to a wingers game than scoring tries, namely preventing them and defence. Davies is considerably better than Marshall in those elements of his game.

Plus I see Davies as 3rd choice behind Burgess and Manfredi.
