I think we've found a great partnership with Connor n makinson, Watkins n Hall going to have their work cut out to get back in to the starting side if them two can continue.

Makinson was unplayable today great game

It does make me wonder what happens mow with Bateman, and if comes back currie. We've Watkins gildart percival n Connor at centre and Bennett seems to want size in the pack, n I cannot see both getting in, Im jot saying that either cannot hold their own but Bennett does have a preferance to size in our forwards.

I think Bennet might keep that Connor/Makinson partnership the other side is pretty competitive with 3 centres and 3 wingers for the one place. I would look at Watkins and Manfredi for those right sided shirts.

McGilvary will be hard to shift from the 2 shirt.
Also thought Thompson was excellent too, he will be in for the foreseeable future.

Makinson played really well, attack and defense. MOM with any doubt.

Thought most played well - but Graham for me looks done - thought he was the lest effective of our props, Hill seemed much more effective when he came on, Thompson is solid drives and tackles hard and makes good metres without being flashy.

The backs did well - for once we seem to have some real competition for places which is long overdue.

Re: Makinson : Sun Nov 04, 2018 8:44 pm
We probably have 30-35 players you’d be happy to pick at the minute and I don’t recall thinking like that before. We’re leading a Kiwi side 2-0, who thumped the Aussies 3 weeks back in a game yet we’re missing a whole host of top class talent. At the very least Widdop, Watkins, Roby, Walmsley and Sam Burgess would get in to this side today but in 12 months players like Manfredi, Hall, Currie, Hardaker, Gale and some younger players will be pushing as well.

The only downside is that they deserve more then a half full ground watching them. There was plenty of scouse voices sat round us today but very very few Yorkshire fans. That’s not to have a go at them and I guess there will be a lack of Lancashire voices next week but the game needs to figure out a way of getting people to travel more then 20 miles to go to an international fixture.

PLEASE no more Watkins. He has had chance after chance and been nothing but a disappointment. Both Gildart and Percival should be given a chance before him, they are the future.

I get the feeling Bennett doesn't trust percival tho and I agree Watkins has mot really performed at international level. I think that Connor and makinson have shown that you cannot just go on reputation, mcgilvray could be under a little pressure as he has had a solid series but has been overshadowed by the other winger in both games for me. His world Cup performances bought him his spot this series have his performances guaranteed him a place in the next international game??

With some of the players available I think we can be a bit more ruthless in who is selected don't perform and there's an adequate replacement to step in and take their chance.

The crowds have been disappointing, but they can be improved success draws attention this is again a big test series wins we didn't make a big deal of it last time and I see no change after this one. I think that at the moment only the gb Australia games are seen as important or worth watching. I think that this test series has been one of the best in a long time, its been brutal with great defences only being broken down by top quality attacking. With Samoa n Tonga and png there's a stronger international group of teams. Still kit great but it's doubled fro gb nz aus in previous years. Changes don't happen over night but things are deffinately improving on the field we must have people in lace to capitalise on this!!!

Finally what's people's thoughts, is there a correlation between the test side playing our club teams stopping and the attendances dropping at international games.? And given our surrent fixture schedule could this be brought back?

Agreed.

I think one of the best things about watching the internationals is seeing who looks like a natural at that level and who does not. Lockers has always looked a better player than he does even at Wigan because he's surrounded by even better players but most importantly rises to the challenge. Makinson did that today. Some so called SL greats do not fair so well (Sinfield....).

We as a sport should be making more of these players PR-wise but we can't because any money they earn from being "the face of Gillette" or whatever counts on the salary cap of their clubs. No point Makinson being the face of anything. There is no money in it. So our best players and our sport lose out (less money so they go to Oz/RU, less PR for the sport respectively). Maybe the new head man can address this and we can start seeing the likes of Makinson becoming nationally known which can only benefit our sport. The last player we had who fitted that bill was Sam Tomkins before he went to NZ.

Agree with pretty much everything in this thread. Good test match, great result.

It will be interesting to see if NZ change their tactic of kicking to Makinson for the 3rd game as it’s clearly not working.

Watkins had a fantastic World up last year. At present I still think he has that right centre slot, but Gildart is snapping at his heels

Next year I'm thinking:

1. Widdop
2. Manfredi
3. Watkins
4. Connor
5. Makinson
6. Williams
7. S.Tomkins
8. Walmsley
9. Hodgson
10. Thompson
11. Bateman
12. Whitehead
13. S.Burgess

14. G.Burgess
15. T.Burgess
16. Clark
17. Hill

I'd start building towards the World Cup whilst we are strong by phasing out McGillvary (30), Hall (30), Gale (30), Graham (33), Roby (32) and Lockers (36). We don't want to get there with loads of new faces who haven't played for us before...
