Seems a bit out of left field but he may be a good fit if the focus is about player welfare.

Adams struggles to come across well in the media. He seems a bit socially awkward.

However he is probably the kind of guy that finds it easy to command respect from fellow professional sportsmen because he was an elite player at the top of his sport for a long time and seems devoid of any personal ego or attention-seeking. When you look at how a lot of today's footballers carry on on their social media, who aren't anywhere close to being of the calibre player Adams was, it puts it all in context.

One thing that was pretty remarkable about Adams...he had a lot of problems, alcoholism, severe mental health troubles during his career, the kind of thing that usually leads to the story "he could have been a great player if it wasn't for all that off field stuff...." but Adams managed to be a top player right through his career, I never remember him not being one of England's best defenders whatever was going on with him off the field.

I've no issue with Adams as an individual. I admire him. However I do wonder whether the RFL's focus should be "player welfare" though at this time. If we don't turn thing around sharpish there will be no professional players welfare at all.

Are you sure you're not exaggerating a bit here Wires71...

There have always been people speculating about the imminent demise of rugby league. When union went professional, it was going to be the death of the game unless we accepted mergers. Then around 2000/2001, when Robinson, Harris, Sailor, Rogers and co were switching codes, people said all league's best players would go to union and the only way for league to survive was to join them in some form of "hybrid game".

I agree that RL is not fulfilling its potential but there's a big difference between that and the collapse of the professional game. I think we're in an iffy phase at the moment, the game is not in the same health it was in the early 1990s or mid 2000s, when the calibre of players and quality of games was better. But I think its in better health now than it was in the late 1990s.

I get your point, but I am worried. The Sky TV deal will be atrocious this time around as Sky no longer views Superleague as a strategic vehicle for them. It's already shifted SL onto the channel for sporting curios.
Then we have the added effect of falling attendances and sponsorship - the Challenge Cup has no sponsor.

There is no doubt the game is in decline currently and I think we may see a none-completely full time time SL team in the future.

What do you think will turn around it's fortunes?

Unfortunately,lack of coverage of the game is having an impact on the standard of advertising & sponsorship ,the last dalliance with top sponsorship was Emirates at the Wire. Rugby Union has so much more coverage....sky, C4, ITV ,C5 & BBC , How much longer before Bachelor's Mushy Peas goes over to the dark side ,especially with the new RU deal mentioned in another topic ?
