Freedom without Socialism is privilege and injustice.
Socialism without freedom is slavery and brutality.

Art Everywhere : Thu Aug 08, 2013 7:35 am
This is billed as the biggest art exhibition ever.
Poster sites across the country are going to be displaying famous British works of art

You can vote/donate here ... or just look at them all :D
http://arteverywhere.org.uk/artworks/

Personally, I am quite keen on the idea and I think Joe Public will take to it.
Apparently, Waterhouse's "Lady of Shallot" is the public's favourite so far but, of course, we'll all have our own preferences.

There's a few favourites on there, Turners "Norham Castle" and the Thomas Jones "A Wall in Naples" is the sort of thing I like.

But the most powerful image on there is the John Singer Sargent "Gassed", I probably did see this at the Imperial War Museum when I went all those years ago, but recently I saw a copy of it used as a theatre backdrop at The Edinburgh Festival during a play based on WW1 - I'm not sure how big the original is (seem to recall its pretty big) but when its blown up to stretch the full width and height of a theatre stage then its the sort of thing that distracts you for a long while in its complexity and detail - tells you everything you need to know about its subject matter without words.

Bloody Pre-Raphelites. Mawkish, sentimental twaddle – and often with an idolatry of woman as dead or about to die (see here and Millais's Ophelia, which is also in the list).

I came across this a few weeks ago via Facebook, where a thread was going on with people whinging that Lucian Freud wasn't art, for instance.

The whinging was so bad it prompted a donation and a selection – in my case, Lowry's Going to the Match (which certainly won't surprise Jerry, at any rate :D ). But like El Barbudo, I think it's a cracking idea.

Agreed.
I too, saw it at the Imperial War Museum ... took me ages to tear myself away from it ... and yes, it's big all right.

I like his "Carnation, lily, lily, rose", for the glow of the lantern light.
(Not in this selection).
Mintball would see it as a bit pretty-pretty, I reckon.

But well-painted though, eh?

I'm a sucker for clever representation of the effects of light, hence I love many of the Dutch masters ... but here, the two by Joseph Wright 'of Derby', whilst showing-off a bit, are superbly executed.

Technically very good indeed. I just detest the subject matter for reasons

Totally agree – Joseph Wright 'of Derby is wonderful. And a huge part of why I love Rembrandt.
