It's dying out, but there seemed to exist a tendency for certain people to boast about whatever 'hard men' they knew. Sometimes as an attempt to menace. But you still see all those books in shops about various of the same type. In many cases, they've made legitimate money (there's an argument there) by telling their stories – and these seem to find a consistent audience.

tbf, mad frankie did spend most of his life in the nick and was certified mental on a couple of occasions.

Where in the Middle East, if it's Saudi the police are utterly useless, corruption is endemic
