Indeed, I don't think the whole ad-on-a-van thing is actually meant to "work" much beyond being seen to be doing something, any lack of effect can be massaged away by highlighting voluntary departures that could well have happened anyway.

On the latter point, it's little different to Cameron's dogwhistle 'politics' on porn.

Despite the fact that its only been running for a week and has been met with astonishment in most quarters, and is being pulled off its trial (probably because of the tweet and phone responses for lifts home), according to that report a "Downing Street spokesperson" has said that it "was starting to work already". Oh really ? So there will be some stats released soon to tell us how many illegal immigrants sent text messages to HM Gov and asked to be deported then ? They think we are as stupid as they are.
