PS - has anyone ever stood in front of a paying audience (ie not your mates) and tried five minutes of stand-up comedy ?

I have, one of the worst experiences of my life

When you start with your best joke and no-one laughs then you know you're in trouble with 4mins 30 seconds of hell to follow

Les Dawson was originally a club pianist and singer. It was during a gig at a Hessle Road fishermen's club that he developed his comedy routine. He was plying his trade one Saturday night to a room full of Three-day Kings (trawlermen) and their wives and getting so much stick that he stopped playing, turned on his stool and told the assembled crowd exactly what he thought of them. They roared with laughter, demanded more and the rest, as they say, is history

Even my 10 year old son and 8 year old daughter love it, and have the clip on ipods

With mention of sketches, Acorn Antiques has to be in there.

Victoria Wood has to be the most multi-talented comedian Britain's seen. Just pips Ronnie Barker by virtue of her stand-up IMO.

The thing with Jim Davidson (and Bernard Manning, for that matter), is that they actually are/were polished performers. It's just their material that's the problem/distasteful. Almost makes me think that it's a shame/waste.

Suppose they have been around for a long time so do have a market.
Jim Davidson for me is about as funny as watching Top Gear with toothache.
