| And on the same day the BBC show Neighbourhood Blues showing a collection of drug-addled Neds from Hull in stinking tracky bottoms shoplifting, stealing cars, riding uninsured bikes up and down the streets etc. Deliberate or coincidence?

Coincidence, seeing as this programme is on its 2nd (?) series from Humberside Police. Not just Hull though is it? I see Immingham was on quite a bit this morning and thats in a totally different county to Hull.

| Great news.
Seems the default city to bash for most people is mine. I wish more people would actually visit the place properly before jumping on the band wagon.

| Hull has its problems, but there isn't a city that doesn't.
If it helps create a bit of energy and pride, even, then what's the problem?

| I visit Hull quite regularly, its surroundings, its city centre and its industrial estates, its a normal city, has a strange accent but you can't help that.
In the, christ nearly 35 years that I have been traveling further than my own city for work purposes I have noticed a dramatic dilution in all of our cities though, Hull is a good example as is Newcastle, of large conurbations that in the late 70s actually had their own character, the accent was the most obvious but comparing the 1970s Hull and Newcastle to Leeds (for example) there was a very definite flavour of completely different cities, you could blindfold someone these days and take them to any city in the country and they wouldn't be able to tell you where they were when you took the blindfold off other than that the retail park you've just arrived at is just like the one in their home town.

| Quote cod'ead="cod'ead"To be fair, if complete sh[ii[/itholes like Liverpool and Glasgow can get European City of Culture status, then Hull gaining UK City of Culture is a mere trifle'"
Liverpool is a centre of culture though - a very creative city with a very strong arts scene and a very strong cultural history. Don't know much about Glasgow, but it was the "second city of the Empire" when Britain represented the very zenith of human civilisation. Liverpool is positively nice compared with Manchester, Bradford, Hull, etc, etc.

| Very proud that Hull has been awarded the City of Culture. We've had more than our fair share of criticism - some due, of course, but plenty completely unjust. It's a great city.
Here's the promotional video that helped us win it.

Liverpool, Glasgow and Hull are all port cities and all have a corresponding strong cultural history, all have been decimated by their traditional industries being annihilated, some would say for political means, all still have strong identities, Hull (for those who don't know) has a very strong manufacturing base now on modern industrial estates and still does a lot of export trade out of its still functioning port, what the city of culture will give it is the same tourist economic boost that both Liverpool and Glasgow have had.
Still think its a shame that St Andrews dock was blitzed into a standard one size fits all cities retail park though, if you ever wanted to see a proper fish dock then it was there.

Here here. Hull is the pit of death! Its is such a hole that when all other phone companies were nationalised to form British Telecom , they didn't want Hull and it's had its own phone company ever since with those old cream phone boxes.

Hallé, the Royal Exchange, the Lowry etc etc. Nope - no arts scene in Manchester.

My comment was not referring to cultural organisations venues but how "nice" the cities are, IMO. Manchester, although, it has improved alot is still dire as far as I'm concerned.
