To reconcile respect with practicality, what is the optimum speed for a hearse?

Here here. Hull is the pit of death! Its is such a hole that when all other phone companies were nationalised to form British Telecom , they didn't want Hull and it's had its own phone company ever since with those poop old cream phone boxes.

If only that was within a light year of right. Maybe you are actually Stevo himself

My comment was not referring to cultural organisations venues but how "nice" the cities are, IMO. Manchester, although, it has improved alot is still dire as far as I'm concerned.

How do you define "nice" ?

York is "nice" to look at but it still has its problem estates and there are still areas of the city that need a lot of investment - and some employment.

In this case in relative terms only!

The purpose of the City Of Culture designation is to accelerate the change in the City’s fortunes by driving a step change in the economy, principally through the tourism and creative media sectors.

It is not about culture per se. I doubt you will find the restaurants, theatres, museums, art galleries, World class football teams, a vibrant music and club scene, or a name known throughout the World, which both Glasgow and Liverpool have.

Simply put, it's about getting coachloads of tourists down the M62 to visit what is in essence a beige city populated by beige people.

Re: City of Culture : Sat Nov 23, 2013 10:51 pm
Having lived in the south for far too long I have got used to the jokes about Hull. The comments about the city all based on personal experience from well educated people. They are inspirational. Then I probe and with the exception of people who have either moved away like me or went to Uni in Hull the amazing thing is nobody seems to have actually been.
I suspect that more of you on here have been to the city, but that probably comprised of driving or being bussed in. Getting out of mode of transport and entering whichever stadium your team is playing at. Then after a game going home.
How many have actually walked the streets, visited the museums, seen one of the many world class acts that play the city hall or new theatre, visited Hull Truck theatre, walked through one of the many parks etc etc. I suspect not many.
Well maybe now is the time to give it a proper go. It's up to the people of Hull to start to big it up. Forget the label which the uneducated give you and shout loud and proud.
Hull has lots to offer its communities and its visitors. This honour will hopefully open a few eyes and give the city a massive boost.
Forget stereotype tripe it's #HullYes from now on.

War does not determine who is right - only who is left.

Thank God I'm an atheist.

I visit Hull occasionally, I quite like it.
It's fashionable to denigrate it.

However its educational achievement is dire and that needs to be addressed. Some of its youngsters don't stand a chance.
That is not right.

Re: City of Culture : Sun Nov 24, 2013 9:36 pm
I spent most of my teens and early twenties there.

Everyone I grew up with had one main ambition - to get out of Hull.

That said, Hull has improved massively in the last 15 years.

The city needs to work out how to retain those who grow up or go to uni there; which means attracting big business and offering well-paid jobs. The knock-on effect would be more money in the local economy, which would boost business and lead to better bars / restaurants / attractions etc...

Everyone from my sixth form / university circle of friends decided to leave Hull after completing their studies.
