Couple of films I caught t'other night:
50/50 - hadn't heard of this but read some rave reviews. Wouldn't call it a comedy as such though it has some genuinely funny moments; it's more about a journey through life-changing events. Joseph Gordon-Levitt develops a complex character as the main protagonist and Seth Rogen
(not the other actor Seth Brogan) is...well, Seth Rogen. I like Rogen so this was a plus. A solid and engaging story that doesn't let you down (although one twist is slightly predictable), superbly acted and very moving when it needs to be; I'd recommend this with an 8/10.
Retreat - with Cillian Murphy from 28 Days Later there were always gonna be comparisons, but this is a solid standalone effort with only a nod to the '28' films. With twists and turns in the main plot and an underlying sub-plot, this remains engaging and clever throughout. Jamie Bell is chilling and intriguing, and a good effort from Thandie Newton. I'd give this another 8/10.
Resistance (2011) - disappointed with this. Maybe my expectations were off the mark but an alternative reality plot in which Germany has successfully invaded the British Isles, set in an occupied Welsh valley promised more. Without giving away any spoilers, don't expect a WW2 film. Not for me: 5/10.
