| Heard a lot about the Avengers before i went to see it and all of it was positive so my expectations were pretty high as i sat down to watch it in 3D.
The film has plenty of nice moments and it rarely lets up in terms of action, some of the effects are stunning and i thought the film was well acted throughout - i thought the Black Widow character in particular was the most interesting.
The only criticism is the plot, or lack of one which stops this from being regarded in the same light as the new Batman films.
Its good but the plot prevents this from being great for me.

| The low-budget American indie film 'Cold Weather' (2011) gets some fairly decent reviews. Film4 tonight. It may well get a look at.

| Couple of films I caught t'other night:
50/50 - hadn't heard of this but read some rave reviews. Wouldn't call it a comedy as such though it has some genuinely funny moments; it's more about a journey through life-changing events. Joseph Gordon-Levitt develops a complex character as the main protagonist and Seth Rogen [size=60(not the other actor Seth Brogan)[/size is...well, Seth Rogen. I like Rogen so this was a plus. A solid and engaging story that doesn't let you down (although one twist is slightly predictable), superbly acted and very moving when it needs to be; I'd recommend this with an 8/10.
Retreat - with Cillian Murphy from 28 Days Later there were always gonna be comparisons, but this is a solid standalone effort with only a nod to the '28' films. With twists and turns in the main plot and an underlying sub-plot, this remains engaging and clever throughout. Jamie Bell is chilling and intriguing, and a good effort from Thandie Newton. I'd give this another 8/10.
Resistance (2011) - disappointed with this. Maybe my expectations were off the mark but an alternative reality plot in which Germany has successfully invaded the British Isles, set in an occupied Welsh valley promised more. Without giving away any spoilers, don't expect a WW2 film. Not for me: 5/10.

| I'm going to admit to the - possibly hugely embarrassing - fact that I watched Jackass 2 the other night on TV, and whilst all of it was juvenile and some of it was almost unwatchably gross, it also made me laugh. A lot.
Also watched Apollo 18, and have to say it was OK for a low-budget movie. Whilst I can see what they were trying to achieve with the mockumentary angle, I think it could have been better as a 'straight' movie with a decent budget.
Went to see Avengers on the weekend with the kids and quite enjoyed it, although not as much as I'd hoped. On the plus side, the previews for Prometheus and the last Batman looked good (although the shot they keep showing of Batman fighting on some steps looks strangely bad - Batman looks like he can barely move let alone punch).

I'll have to disagree with Mr Ebert on this one. It shouldn't have got a look at....
