I've never had an issue with O2 anywhere in the North of England, there are a couple of others that take that crown, 3 by a country mile.
3s coverage is fantastic in my experience. They got a bad reputation early doors and it's stuck, whenever I say I'm on 3, the stock response is "But their coverage is terrible". Their network is the best of the major networks in my experience and I've used O2, Orange and T-Mobile extensively recently due to work. If you are on 3 and can get a signal, you can pretty much get an internet capable signal. The only place in the UK I've found that 3 doesn't work in was a remote hill in Cumbria we camped on once.
Of course there is an element of personal experience that clouds these judgements, for example because O2 doesn't cover my home and is next to useless at work I'm bound to criticise it. When it doesn't work in Warrington or on the outskirts of Manchester you have to wonder. The % coverage stats are very similar for O2 and 3 in the UK now and 3 has a significantly higher ratio of internet capable coverage than O2.
