Long before Wikipedia and the Internet, way back in the dawn of the popular computing revolution in the 1980's the BBC created the DOOMSDAY PROJECT 1986 In it the bbc collected data from across the UK from over a million volunteers most of whom were children and it makes for a very interesting snapshot of life then. A project was recently completed to transfer all the data into a format that can be read and viewed by people today, as the original data was encoded onto laser discs in a format for which only a handful of devices are left working in the whole world. The link to the site is here http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/domesday/using-domesday You can search for your town or sports club or just something of interest and you can see what was written about at the time. There are thousands of photographs as well.
