So. in theory, leaving the EU, to me, is going to work out. I never thought it would but seeing the way the EU (NOT EUROPE) is behaving makes me believe we are better off out of it. The EU (NOT EUROPE) are demanding fishing rights and the ECJ having a say, that isn't what the majority were expecting.

The EU (NOT EUROPE) isn't really the EU at all, it is Germany, France and to some extent, Italy, who are making it as tough as possible. They are petrified that a successul exit from the EU for the UK will encourage other EU members (or their electorate) to want the same.

Interesting points.

I don’t really see the behaviour of the EU being surprising, and I don’t see how they can be blamed for the unrealistic expectations of an (about to be) third country.

The EU can’t demand access to UK waters for fishing or a role the ECJ. But conversely, the UK can’t demand unfettered access to EU markets for the fish it catches (or its financial services). They all become tradeables in the negotiation.

While I can see that these ‘unexpected challenges’ might make you less well-disposed to the EU, I don’t understand why they make you more confident it will work out well.

I agree there’s a strong incentive for the EU to ensure that Brexit isn’t a roaring success that leads to a rush for the exits, leading to its disintegration. Equally, they don’t want it to be catastrophic, as they don’t want the blowback. None of which is surprising.

Surprise surprise Farage will keep his money cow the Brexit party going. The way it was formulated was to have the members contribute financially but have no say in how it was run or it’s policies.

Grimsby which voted for Brexit now wants to be exempt from the consequences

https://www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk/news ... TfyfLnqMAg

As you sow, so shall you reap !

The reality of Brexit will soon start hitting home and it will be the working class that pay.

Do they really think that. When it comes to a choice between the city or Britain’s fishing industry the Tories will protect fisher men.

Listen. I voted remain. But despite what all the people in this thread think and what they post on here as fact, no one knows what will happen and it’s hilarious watching people write stuff on here like it’s fact. If they could predict with certainty, the stuff they put on here they would be very rich people

The EU are demanding fishing rights because the fishing industry in EU countries fishes in those waters and so as their representatives in a trade negotiation they are demanding it.

Same as the US are demanding that the UK lowers its food standards, so that their agrifood companies can sell things in to the UK market that are currently not allowed.

This is what happens in trade negotiations. The UK will be demanding things from the EU as well - particularly around banking and financial services and access to EU markets there. Things will be traded off.

The interesting part about fishing rights for me isn't that the EU were demanding it, that was always going to be the case. It's whether the UK will use fishing as a concession to get something they want. If it comes to trading off the interests of fishermen v bankers, who will Boris prioritise?

If you look at the fishing industry, those catching want to extend the no fishing limit to 12 miles to keep all others out but those that buy and sell their fish want free access to the EU who buy the majority.
We also fish in French waters so I guess we will not be doing so after December.

Fishing has always been a contentious subject.
As things were, the quotas would be abused by having owners of trawling fleets registering in the country where they stood to gain the most.
Where the fish are caught and where they are landed are two completely different things - it's far from straightforward.

As for ANY industry wanting special dispensation

Everything is now being tosses in to the negotiating pot and whilst we are sure to have some priorities and some red lines, ultimately, it's all about getting what is deemed the best overall deal but, necessarily, there will be winners and losers.
Mind you, the words uttered by the EU regarding the relative size of the UK vs the size of the EU does mean that we are David vs their Goliath.
Catapults at the ready :D
