coronavirus and sport ? : Tue Feb 25, 2020 11:10 am
Although any sport doesnt matter in the wake of any kind of health scare, it would appear that fully controlling the outbreak of the coronavirus hasn't been possible and that there are now cases in most countries accross the planet, with differing responses from country to country.
We've already seen Italian Football cancelling games, to try and restrict the spread of the virus and you wonder whether similar steps will need to be taken in other sports and even perhaps in RL ?

This certainly doesn't look like its going to go away any time soon and the question is whether it will impact on our sport, especially the games in France and Toronto ?

Why have you singled out France and Toronto out of curiosity?

I would imagine it's because they're the only places where overseas games are currently played in the Super League and the Championship? Unless you know of any others? Obviously this works the other way, too.

Numbers of people travelling in close proximity, with air travel and recycled air, being hot beds for spreading virus's.
The same could happen on trains/ public transport in the UK but, with the Virus already closing in on the Eastern French border, there would be potentially more risk.
Certainly, at this point in time, travel from country to country carries more risk than domestic travel.

That's very harsh. I take it that you cant "work from home" ?
I think there is a strong chance that many countries and cities, especially those in the tourist industry, will be keeping a lid any outbreaks of the virus, which will hasten it's spread.
Plenty are taking it very seriously but, others less so.
It seems odd that may are being advised to self isolate when coming back from certain places and yet, there is no restriction on travel to these destinations, which just seems crazy.
Hope that you any your work mates are all ok and of course the kids who have returned from their trip.

Everyone ok afaik. But it does seem as if some of the advice is laughable . Lots of talk about if you have symptoms self isolate but from what I know apparently you can be infection and spreading it for 10 days before symptoms show . Which means that as you pollinated out the government advice seems somewhat illogical

I agree and surely if there are "at risk" areas, there should be strong advice not to visit.

Well yes, because it would make perfect sense to carry spreading the virus once you display symptoms. Crack on, screw everyone else.

The advice is to self quarantine if you've been to an infected area or display symptoms. Yes, you may have already unwittingly spread the virus, that's just common sense. But to carry on spreading it regardless is just idiotic.

One of my colleagues was also in northern Italy last week and now has 2 weeks at home to look forward to. The support from NHS-111 and Public Health England had been superb. They've been in regular contact, including through the night.

TBH it's likely the horse has bolted in many countries and things have escalated this week, but minimising the spread is still important. With an estimated mortality rate of 2-3% it's worth us all doing our bit.

It does seem strange not to prevent travel to some of the more stricken areas but to then quarantine people when they arrive back here.
Although there would be uproar if people couldn't take their holidays etc, surely this would be a more effective method of restricting the virus.
I well aware of course that, new cases are being diagnosed on a daily basis and that it's impossible to know where they are going to occur.
However, at some point, it may be wise/neccessary to impose some travel restrictions.
I notice that the Irish government are wanting to postpone the forthcoming Ireland v Italy game - again, the masses wont be happy but, it seems like a sensible idea from where I'm sitting.
