Fans’ fears allayed over Challenge Cup final : Wed Aug 10, 2011 3:07 pm
The RFL has moved to allay supporters’ concerns about the Carnegie Challenge Cup final at Wembley in light of riots that are currently causing severe disruption on the streets of London. Although the Metropolitan Police have taken the decision to postpone tomorrow’s scheduled football friendly between England and Holland at Wembley for public safety reasons, the RFL does not anticipate a similar outcome when Leeds Rhinos play Wigan Warriors on Saturday August 27. “We are monitoring events in London closely and are continuing to liaise with Wembley officials,” said the RFL’s Director of Marketing and Communications Andy Hewitt. “At the moment there is nothing to suggest that the 2011 Carnegie Challenge Cup final is in any doubt and we are sure that situation will continue. “Demand for tickets since last weekend’s semi-finals has been phenomenal and the RFL Ticket Office has been experiencing brisk business all week. I’m sure that will continue in the build up to one of the country’s most famous and eagerly anticipated sporting occasions.” In the unlikely event that the 2011 Carnegie Challenge Cup final does not go ahead due to the civil unrest, all fans who have purchased tickets will be offered the choice of a full refund or tickets for the rescheduled final.
