A good "Big un" or a good "Little un." : Tue May 28, 2013 8:42 am  

The prospect of Mick Nanyn eventually coming into the side and adding a little extra size got me thinking about the old adage of " A Good Big un is better than a Good Little un."

Not always the case though there have been times when it has been the other way round where the
"Good Little un" has turned the tables.

I'm sure you Fax or other club Gurus out there will be able to recall a few such occasions so lets here em.

To start off.

Mr Crooks v Mr Bishop.

Where the Fax (shall we say lively) number 7 wound up the Cas playing former international that much Crookies resorted to giving Bish some Bash and promptly got to sit down for a bit.

A comical follow up was when John Bentley commented that a couple of Cas supporters reportedly stayed behind to give Mr Bishop a hiding.

Bentos said it was one of the few occasions of "The fan hitting the S**t."

There is also a follow up to this particular story as Bishop was hit by a woman with her handbag at the match before he reached the dressing room the Cas players thought this hilarious particulary Lee Crooks . However it wasn`t till he returned home a few hours later he found out the woman assailant was his next door neighbour . Lee told me this tale himself a few years ago on a visit to our pub.

After the exploits of one scrum half onto another.

This time Gavin "The pinch" Clinch.

Anyone who has seen him play will know he had the art of ball stealing off to a tea and regularly came away with the ball regardless of who he was tackling.

One such occasion sticks firmly in mind because it was the last thing I expected.

Fax were at the Shay playing Huddersfield and 25 meters out Nick Fozzard came charging through the line onto a short ball.

(NF had the habit of carrying the ball with his forearms slightly raised, Paul Cullen used to call them "Fozzards Bumper bars".)

Some will recall the game.

The only Halifax player between him and a certain 4 points was Gav.

I was stood directly front on inline with the action and had formed this mental image of Clinchy being smashed out of the way and Fozzard striding over.

The next thing you know not only had Clinchy effected a tackle but he had stolen the ball and was off down the field to go in at the other end. Gob smacked comes to mind.

Strike one more up for the good "Little un".

So effective was Gavin Clinch at this that it is rumoured that at least one opposition coach warned his players that they would be fined if they allowed him to do it to them.

No doubt some will have been short of a bob or two.

Clinchy used to "nip" his opponents on contact I'm told that's how he effected his "pinch"
