Alternative Championship league current standings. : Sat May 31, 2014 6:13 am  

Some food for thought here, after last weekend's Championship fixtures. Here's the current league table minus all bonus points:

1. Leigh 36
2. Fev 27
3. Donny 24
4. Dewsbury 21
5. Keighley 21
6. Halifax 20
7. Sheffield 18 ( with a game in hand )
8. Whitehaven 18
9. Batley 15
10. NWC 15
11. Rochdale 12
12. Workington 11
13. Swinton 6
14. Barrow 6

And here is the league standing with each team's current win ratio %:

1. Leigh 100% - 12 games 12 wins.
2. Fev 75 % - 12 games 9 wins 3 losses.
3. Donny 66% - 12 games 8 wins 4 losses.
=4. Dewsbury 58.3% - 12 games 7 wins 5 losses.
=4. Keighley 58.3% - 12 games 7 wins 5 losses.
6. Sheffield 54.5% - 11 games 6 wins 5 losses.
7. Halifax 50% - 12 games 6 wins, 1 draw, 5 losses.
8. Whitehaven 50% - 12 games 6 wins 6 losses.
=9. Batley 41.6% - 12 games 5 wins 7 losses.
=9. NWC 41.6% - 12 games 5 wins 7 losses.
11. Rochdale 36.3% - 11 games 4 wins 7 losses.
12. Workington 25% - 12 games 3 losses 1 draw 8 losses.
13. Swinton 16.6% - 12 games 2 wins 10 losses.
14. Barrow 16.6% - 12 games 2 wins 10 losses.

Do any of our posters still doubt the value of the bonus point ? I was one of the one's who was happy when it was brought in, I was of the the thinking if there's a point on offer you might as well take it even if you do lose a game. Obviously, i hope Fax win tomorrow ( and every match for that matter ! ) but if they don't win tomorrow it's 2nd place gone, so early in the season. I do accept that in previous seasons it has been rather worthless in terms of end of season value in the league ladder, but for half a million quid prize money i reckon it's value has grossly increased this season.

It goes without saying i may have worked things out in the above tables/stats incorrectly so apologies if i have.

I am one who still doubts it's value, me and the rest of the rugby league governing bodies worldwide. If it was any good we would be seeing it in the NRL and Superleague. Just because we benefit from it this year doesn't change my opinion.

There is still the chance a team can loose by 2 tries to nil, not score a point and still pick up a bonus point.

By the way, whilst your table may be correct, the numbers should be different. Without bonus it would be 2 points for a win and 1 for a draw.

I hate the bonus point. Don't care what happens to our theoretical league standing without it; It's the principle of it - a reward for losers. It has no place in competitive sport. Just my own conservative opinion of course.

I agree, there should be no place in our sport for picking up a point when losing.

Think there would be an alternative thread in my opinion devaluing the BP if fax werent marooned in a potential mid table scrap and were at the top of the table by a couple of points

I agree with you.

Hate it, always have. I hope with the changes to the structure next year it's dead in the water.

I think if you get a point for loosing by 12 or less you should get a bonus point for beating a team by 13 or more points.

In cricket you get a lot of points for losing!

So, i'll ask the question:

If we finish 2nd place or above at the end of this season, you won't acknowledge the value of the BP ? Anyone ?

One system I've always thought worth a try was a bonus point for an aggregate win from the home and away games against a team. This would give a team incentive to pile the points on if winning or keep going if losing. I think it was used in speedway at one time. The Obediah Brooke, Cleckheaton. Saltaire Cascade, 4.8% Mmm!
