Recorded the game on V+ and from what i can see its clear that the majority of fax player are offside when Black kicks the ball and that Gannon does get involved in the play eventually but by the time the ball has bounce hasn't Ben played everyone onside by been infront of them? and by getting to the ball first? even if Gannon does touch the ball (which I don't think he does) isn't he pleayed onside by ben?

Yes Ben plays them all onside so clearly the video ref got it wrong, which really with the benefit of the cameras and different points of view he has, he shouldnt be getting it wrong, shocking decision. Dont get me wrong im not plucking at straws for an excuse, i have no problem with Leigh winning at all..but surely the video ref screwed up? Typical SL.

Although all of the above makes complete sense, I'm sure there must have been a genuine reason to disallow it. Or at least I hope so as they can't get it so wrong, surely?!

Im sure the club will ask the question and the RFL will have to give a response so maybe they will be kind enough to post it on here.

I think that the call was that one of the offside players encroached within 10 yards of the ball player before Black played him onside.

But I may be wrong....

That's how I see it the intial 10 meter encroachment before Black had run past them.
Some go for you and some against for example at Fev in the semi when Bostock knocked the ball back in play to Saxton in the top corner his feet had not gone over the line but we got the head and feed at the scrum when Fev should have had the try and on that occasion it never even went to the screen.

As I understand it when the kick goes in all the players that are in front of the kicker are in an offside position, if any of those players encroach within 10 meters or interfere with the oppostions receiving player before the kicker runs past them and puts them on side then it is a penalty to the defending side as the offense/encroachment happened first and everything after that is irrelevant. This as come from watching previous games with the resulting calls from the video ref. Is there any reference to that scenario in the rules? I think it might be this. Interfering with Catcher 2. Any off side player who remains within ten metres of an opponent who is set to catch a kick up field by an opposing player shall be deemed to be interfering with or attempting to interfere with the catcher and shall be penalised unless the non-offending team gains an immediate advantage.

That could be it. Although i dont think Gannon interfered with the catcher, he was certainly within 10 meters of the catcher. I am sure I have seen, on may occasions, where the offside player encroaches the 10 meter from the catcher, but just gets shouted at by the ref to not touch him!!!!!

Its all academic now, of course, but just needed some clarification.

Yes your right it had nothing to do with complaints about the result but more to do with understanding and interpreting the rules and until I looked on the link you posted I was unsure.
I think if Leigh had caught the ball cleanly instead of it bouncing around then the ref would have given Jim the call, as it was there's the massive high ball and a stampede of players all over the place hence the video ref's part and even then he had 4 or 5 looks at it.
