This season could have dire financial implications for any clubs not making it through the latter stages of the choo choo cup & play-offs.

Doubt it. They won't be winning many games so the wages are probably going to be on the low side.

I know you're an accountant Richard, but if you get knocked out of a comp you don't exactly create any gate receipts. Teams under-performing will suffer at the turnstiles.

Then it just re inforces my opinion of the complete ineptitude of our clubs management, and their lack of understanding of what the fans ( their customers ) actually want and are willing to pay for

Teams knocked out in the last 16 of the Northern Rail will miss out on three games (max). Dwarfed by the number of league games (26). Only four teams will play more than two NRC games anyway. The generally held view is that knock-out games are less well supported than league games these days. You only get half the gate anyway. There are no big games against your Leedses or your Wigans in the NRC. Fact is that, prize money aside (and there's not much of that these days), you only make cash out of the game you lose.

As a supporter, I'd be disappointed if we lost at the first hurdle. If I was holding the purse strings, I wouldn't be all that bothered.

To a point I agree. Though fans often display a complete lack of understanding of what the clubs can afford.

Tell you what, MM, I'll put some figures to it.

Suppose you're drawn away against local rivals Cleckhuddersmondwike. 2000 turn up, paying an average of £10 (there'll be some kids and old codgers in there), total gate receipts £20000.

The Government want a sixth of that for VAT before you start. Now you have £16667.

There'll be match costs, including Fax's bus to Cleckhuddersmondwike, say £1667 to make the arithmetic easier. £15000 left.

OK, you get half. £7500.

You win, so you've winning pay to pay out. 17 at whatever - say £300. Oh - and the Government want 13.8% NIC, so call it £6000 (£5100 gross pay and £900 NIC).

Leaves you with £1500 - out of which you may have to pay other costs, maybe not. Not a bad week.


In the next round, you draw Southern Softies away, average gate 500 and they let people in cheap to try and build up support. You are hot favourites to win and progress to the semifinals............

Cup ties - not a licence to make money.

Rugby League is not a license to make money, how many times has this been said.

In the cup tie context at our level the only real chance of getting any sort of immediate finacial return is if you win it.

Longer term you may attract some sponsership if they think there could be some exposure for them for example through TV.

Away from just the money side of things cup tie rugby is part and parcel of the sport and at least does give the supporters some extra interest.

The play offs are a sort of a bridge between league and cup rugby.

Your league postion is rewarded by home advantage in the plays off's but it still leaves the other lower placed clubs a chance of the cherry.

An outstanding example of this was last year when the Eagles
produced some of the best rugby of the year to beat every one above them to take the prize.

Never mind the cash aspect, for a rugby league supporter it was worth the proverbial fortune.
