Good point.

The RFL yes, on the basis of the "what's good for the game as a whole" agenda at the moment.

SL clubs will be divided by those that put self interest first.

With that in mind I am deeply concerned that this "new structure process" is just a sham by some of the SL clubs to get the comp reduced to 12 teams, grab the extra money and then say the rest won't work.

If they both give it the thumbs down then we will produce nothing hence the importance the next 5 years as opposed to the last 5 years.

I heard that only SL clubs might be able to have under 20s, from next year.

Not bad with no funding at Leigh, with all tha cash thrown at Sheffield from various sources how many have you brought through ?

What cash would that be ? Earned from the commercial staff's hard work ?

That's a decent record though - albeit from what we're constantly told is one of the hotbeds of the game. How much did it cost to run the junior teams ?

@triran, faxcar and brew

My impression is that it's much more common for clubs in our division to sign the kids who didn't quite make it at $uperleague development level rather than players from their own junior teams. Obviously, times have changed, and there's no transfer fee market. On top of that, travelling around is relatively easy these days and the good kids won't necessarily sign for their local side, they'll often take the best financial deal.

Sure, you can pick out examples and exceptions, so you can, but I often wonder how worthwhile junior teams are at our level. Are they just something you like to have rather than something that's actually useful.

Having said that, anyone with ambitions for $uperleague needs to have some structure below their first team. At the moment, you don't seem to need anything particularly well developed.

Overseas players more expensive ? May be true in $uperleague but not at our level.

Apologies if I am wrong but don't Sheffield get some central funding greater than other chp clubs, also the Uni tie in and funded dev officers that play for you?

Afraid you're wrong there. Browse page 81 of this month's RL World - it couldn't be in much bigger writing.

True about the Uni, up to a point - but, hey, anyone can link up with a Uni. Doesn't have to be in your town.

Back to the overseas question, these players usually have a higher profile so the extra money can be justified by the promotional work they do.
Shad and Blacky were instantly recognisable and did some great work promoting the club.
The U20's aren't in a position to step up yet so bringing in an overseas player is an option, we need a half-back and don't seem to have been able to source one at home so why no. Though the signing of Finn may help with that if the rumours are true.

If the right overseas player was available and it was a financially sound deal. Then I'd expect the coaching staff to consider it. But it costs a lot of money to fly a man and sometimes his family half way around the world. And is a disaster if a Anthony SeuSeu gets off the plane!

Rounding up what I and the the Fax massive are after.

Seeing that we are desperate and in the interest of saving time.

If you are a quality foreign rugby league player that wants paying a lot, has other family members or dependants and are unable to make it overhere on your own steam and can't speak in a Yorkshire accent don't bother applying.

FAILURE ISN'T ABOUT FALLING DOWN, FAILURE IS STAYING DOWN..........

How many players have come through your youth system in say the last five years ?

Just asking .........

Griff, I consider myself more than qualified to answer this veiled sarcastic question of yours as I co-ordinated the club's scholarship for two or three years until the RFL imposed abolishment of our scholarship for two seasons. Given that most of our current U20's are 18 years old & we picked several of them up on my own reccomendation four or five years ago, don't you find it odd that not many of our 1st team aren't homegrown ?
Niall Berrett & Brent Taylor have both debuted in the pre-season friendlies and that's without mentioning the others who posters have mentioned earlier in the thread.
Be patient, some of them will filter through in my opinion.

It was a genuine question. The other posters took it at face value - as intended.

It's comparing the cost of producing your own players to the cost of picking them up from other clubs. And bearing in mind that the players you produce may well go elsewhere once you've developed them - at, more than likely - no reward for your club.

Business decision.
