FAILURE ISN'T ABOUT FALLING DOWN, FAILURE IS STAYING DOWN..........

Not always the case Nat but you do have a point. Let's take Luke Ambler as an example, signed for Solly, played at Leeds & London but found his way home, oh & who was it who signed him at his first pro club ? Our very own Karl Harrison & his scout !

The system has possibilities, but is one scout or one area to scout enough ?

Luke Ambler was part of the clubs old Scholarship scheme when he was about 15, the coaches at the time were Dan Steel and Rosey. So in effect he was on the radar of Halifax but the trouble is if you aren't in Super League is hard to keep players that are any good, as they want to go and play Super League (and rightly so). As it happens the scholarship scheme was scrapped and Ambler then went onto Salford where he signed pro, which he probably would have done anyway.

I think you miss my point, you can have as many scouts as you want but if you cannot offer local lads a route to SL, which Halifax can't at the minute, you will lose out on all of the best local talent. The only time you get that talent back, is when it is deemed they aren't good enough for Super League, and no disrespect to Ambler but that's what happened to him.

Agree. The best players will always sign for a $uperleague club until they're told they're not wanted there.

It's a choice of full time wage or part time wage.

So what about the young fella James Cording leaving Huddersfield full-time to go to Fev ? The money he is reputatedly on at Fev is almost double what he was on at Huddersfield.

The scouts have to be looking in the correct places to talent spot, their club has to have the correct pathway & there are very many part-time RL players on decent contracts at their championship clubs plus appearance money & win bonuses that eclipse squad salaries & gametime at SL clubs for the bit part players.

If thats true it means Fev are paying over the odds for a lad who hasn't even become an established first team player yet. That's a big gamble on their part, and how many times could you actually afford do this with a Championship budget? Of course you will get a few good quality youngsters that come through Championship systems such as Chris Hill but never enough to do what Wigan and Leeds do in terms of having a large percentage of their squad come through the acadamy system. When you can't offer young lads a route to the top league the best lads will always go to Super League sides, unless as you mention above you offer them more money, even then this would only tempt a few as I believe most youngsters want a chance to play at the best level regardless of what money they are offered in the early years. I do agree with you though MM our scouting activity and procedures have to vastly improve so we are first on the scene when either someone slips off the radar of SL clubs or a good young player becomes available from SL Clubs. We also need to be more active on the junior amateur scene by the sounds of other posts I have read on this forum.

Without a thorough scouting system then there will be less chance of discovering talent, local or otherwise so any chance of finding a potential star will be reduced.

This would make the question of whether they stay or go academic.

I agree, about the scouting system, but even if you have the best scouting system in the world unless you can offer a package the kids (and their parents/agents) want, you are fighting a losing battle.

I don't think Halifax can offer that at the moment, if the prospect of promotion was there, I think this would change.

That's a fair point and just about sums it up.
Like Ambler who has been mentioned said something similar, that he still has SL ambitions and he would like it to be with Halifax, if we do not progress then I'm sure he will probably reassess the situation in the next year or so.
