From Code13A club from the Scottish island of Mull could become one of the new teams to enter the renovated Championship One competition according to local press reports.
The Tobermory side, likely to be branded as the Tobermory Titans look like they will be successful in their aim of joining the Championship with the game’s governing body keen to expand the geographical base of the professional game.
Tobermory is the main village on the Isle of Mull in Scotland and was made famous by the children’s television program Balamory. Mull is the largest of the islands of Argyll and the third largest in Scotland. The picture-postcard high street with brightly painted houses could be the location of one of a number of new teams bidding for inclusion into the Championship competition in 2012. However doubts will be raised over potential crowds as Tobermory has a population of just 705 permanent residents.
The RFL is thought to want to see 12 teams in both the Championship and Championship One so there are places available for new teams.
“We’re definitely interested in joining the Championship in 2012” a spokesman for the Titans told local press.
“We want to build on the press that Tobermory has received from the BBC with their Children’s TV program based in our town, Balamory”
The RFL deadline for expressions of interest from clubs is April 11 and the spokesman for the proposed club is confident they can have a good proposal in place.
“We’re in the process of finalising our proposal and up till now have kept our intensions secret, so as not to alert too many people” he added.
“The RFL are keen on a wider geographical spread and don’t just want more teams from along the M62 corridor, we’re perfectly positioned for the Championships”.
The club are lining up a lucrative sponsorship proposal with the key ferry company that serves the Island, Caledonian, which could see the club funded in their first three years and free ferry trips to the Island for visiting teams.
If the Tobermoray team were to be successful in their bid the Island would be visited by the likes of Doncaster, South Wales Scorpions and Oldham.
