Neil's notes v Sheffield/Away travel v Leigh : Sun May 22, 2011 6:52 pm
Well at last our 2nd league win of the season. A very evenly balanced game which could have gone either way but good to see we competed for the whole 80 minutes. Rob Worrincy was the guest player in the bar. He had a very interesting game with the attention he got from the Sheffield players and the "warm" reception he got from the Sheffield supporters each time he had the ball. What was good to hear was he was proud to pull on the blue and white shirt.
The latest results in Club 1873 saw the first prize of a £20 voucher going to number 13, David Ransley and the 2nd prize £15 voucher to number 11, Gordon Raistrick.
The Hitman award sponsored by Halifax RLFC Players Association went to Lee Paterson for his try saving tackle just before half time when he somehow got back to haul the Sheffield player down just before the line. The other player in pursuit was Makali Aizue but he was just not quick enough. That tackle proved to be the match winner. Talking of the Players Association they handed over £100 to the Faxbuilder fund which was raised last Wednesday night at the re-opening of the Hall of Fame.
Voting for the Southdale Lounge Player of the Season saw Makali picking up the first place with 3 points, second was Sean Penkywicz with 2 points and 3rd with 1 point was Danny Jones. That now puts Makali back in the lead on his own with 11 points closely followed by Penky on 10 and 3rd Danny Jones on 8.
The Golden Gamble winning number was 5501 for £188.
The biggest and most important occasion however today was the appearance of David Singer at half time.
The applause he received and the length of this was a credit to all fans. His wave to the supporters in each stand was very touching. Having spoken to David and his mum and dad before the game they were looking forward to his first match since the final. He said he thought we might just win today and the players duely obliged. He has still a long way to go on his recovery but slowly improving week by week.
Our next match is at Leigh on Thursday 2nd June at 7.30, live on Sky. We are running our usual coach to the game setting off from the Shay at 5.45pm. Cost is £10 adults and juniors £5 .
