That's a good point, but I don't know the correct ruling on this. I'd still believe him to be offside regardless of whether he runs back to the 20m line.

We see players offside in games ignore attacking players when they could so easily run back to the full 10 and then make the tackle.

So you are saying that anyone in an offside position when the ball is played can not make a tackle (or interception) in that play, regardless of whether he gets onside or not.
