Well I would't say David Furner was either average or a disaster - but each to his own opinion

He also didn't come to Leeds between 1985 - 1996

SAINTS THE ORIGINAL AND PERENNIAL CHEATS For sale full Saints kit (circa 1989). Shirts in pristine condition, but shorts badly soiled. For 27 - 0 you get a trophy For 75 - 0 you get sod all. Wigan had eight in a row Saints have five in a row
Furner leaving was BIG mistake at Wigan. We had an outstanding crop of young players just starting to emerge, O'Loughlin, Hock, Brown, Robinson, Aspinwall, Hodgson, Wild, Tickle etc.
However we lost the likes of O'Connor, Lam, Craig Smith, Pongia, Cassidy and Farrell within a short space of time, plus of course Mike Gregorys sad illness.
The kids did well generally and won some great tussles against Saints and yourselves, but the lack of experienced leaders around them eventually took it's toll.

I would also argue that although a gamble, the fact we had Clarke & Betts emerging as back rowers (Specifically Clarke) meant the loss of Hanley to Wigan wasn't as significant as we,prior that point, would have thought.
To Leeds he may have been exceptional (And I didn't watch him week in week out when he left unlike yourself) but he didn't really come back to haunt us and Wigan fans (With Hindsight) didnt look back on it as a bad thing that he left.
As for Sally's point about it meaning we were able to afford Offiah then i would disagree.
That came much later, hanley had decided by April 91 that he was going to Leeds, The Offiah situation was still "Up in the air" December 91 & early Jan 92.

But Wigan had that transfer fee in their pocket which reduced Leeds spending power and increased theirs, which was significant given that Leeds and Wigan were in a bidding war for Offiah.
