What scenario keeps McDermott in his job? : Fri Dec 02, 2016 10:53 am
People were calling for McDermott's head mid season, and after overseeing one of the worst seasons in living memory it's not hard to see why. That said,Whatever you think of him, as far as silverware alone goes he has to be commended for the job he has done up until the end of 2015. At this point, imo at least, he should have walked away having achieved everything he could with the club and with his stock as high as it would ever likely be. Losing his right arm (Sinfield and Peacock) he should have seen the writing on the wall but decided to continue anyway which of course was his right. Now, i also get GH backing him up to a certain point. money in the bank and all that. But there still was a point just before Segeyaro arrived when he looked like he had lost the dressing room...we were getting humiliated in a fair few games and he just looked like he wanted to go judging by his increasingly bizarre post game interviews. That was probably the point at which he should have been removed but he wasn't and saw the season out. A lot of the turn around was due to the arrival of Segeyaro, and with him all but confirming he won't be back we are back with pretty much the same squad that was getting mullered by 40 and 50 points mid season again. Granted, we will have a few players back in the fold that were missing for large chunks but the spine will be very similar as things stand and it's hard to imagine too much of a different game plan than we incorporated for much of that woeful first few months, especially if it's back to Burrow at 9 as is pretty likely.
All this taken into consideration it's hard to see us really pushing for a play off spot and if we are completely honest our squad as it stands (taking Segeyaro out) is not as good as Wigan, Cas, Hull and Warrington at least. You could possibly throw Saints in too but we'll have to see there. So if we finish below the play offs how will this sit with the fans, or more importantly GH? if we start slow and it looks like possible middle 8's again when does he pull the trigger?
Personally, i could handle middle of the table but want to see far better rugby being played, this year was total dross. Thoughts?
