The season starts in October. Until then, don't panic!

: Fri Apr 03, 2009 5:51 pm
I've always maintained that there are certain incidents, that if they happened to my family, would result in me taking the law into my own hands, and I'm probably not the only one.

Hopefully the next RL players to be sentenced are dealt with more severley, and a prison sentence is deemed suitable.

Your job is to say to yourself on a job interview does the hiring manager likes me or not. If you aren't a particular manager's cup of tea, you haven't failed -- you've dodged a bullet.

As I remember many people at the time, including the Leeds club, were shocked by the custodial sentence given in the Walker/Bailey judgement. I seem to remember the club making a statement that they thought that the sentence was overly harsh. If you think like that then maybe they got the Cockayne judgement right. I don't think prison is much use sometimes. The kid has a job (or maybe not? I don't think the league should de-register him but it's possible) and a sporting club can be the best place for someone to learn from a mistake like this. And, he hasn't gotten away with it. Any more trouble and he's inside for a considerable stretch and his career is effectively over.
He's been punished but the best chance of protecting the public from him may be to have him a useful member of society?

Then again if he goes out and beats up someone else next week I'm talking out of my @r$e.

Surely this sends a message out that it is OK to kick a man half senseless - what if the guy had died or suffered brain injury should he have dealt with in the same way - his actions could have been identical but with a different result?

On the field Cockayne appears indisciplines and hot-headed this is further evidence of a man incapable of controlling his temper - do you think playing an agressive sport is going to help him control that?

It does seem a little lenient.

Also, with clear CCTV evidence, why nearly a year and a half to get resolved?

If you seriously want to know what goes on in a magistrates head when he/she considers sentencing then you may want to have a look at The Magistrates Sentencing Guidelines and in particular pages 26 to 28 which cover ABH and all of the mitigating circumstances which have to be taken into account.

Then go ahead have a Daily Mail rant.

No he would have been dealt with a more punitive charge and punishment.

Thats how it works, read the guidelines.

No one ever stopped the church by pulling down the steeple,
You'll never beat the system by bombing number 10,
Systems aren't just made of bricks, they're also made of people,
You may send them into hiding but they'll be back again

Eccleshill Rhino wrote:
Surely this sends a message out that it is OK to kick a man half senseless no it doesn't, he wasn't commended for his actions, he recieved a suspended term of imprisonment with a requirement to complete a significant number of hours of unpaid work - what if the guy had died or suffered brain injury should he have dealt with in the same way you didn't think before you typed that, did you? If either of those outcomes had arisen the charges would have been just a tad different - his actions could have been identical but with a different result?

It's not how much talent you've got, it's what you do with it that counts.

: Fri Apr 03, 2009 6:15 pm
This is appauling, just what exactly do you have to do to get sent down these days. Makes no wonder that there are incidents like this in most towns up and down the country when the "punishment" is so ridiculous.

For those that say there are not enough available spaces in prison to cater for criminals like this, what is stopping us building some more prisons, and employing people in the process?

There is so little discipline in society these days, and it's not going to change until punishments fit crimes and there are effective deterrents in place.

Disgraceful.
