The Leigh prop isnt a bad shout. I dont think anyone expects us to be in the race for Luke Thompson or a big name Aussie, but we should be looking at prop given how badly that position has gone for us.

Leigh Prop?

I think those wanting a big name prop are going to be highly disappointed until Prior and Tetevano leave we won't be signing a star NRL prop -and I'm not sure that's the way forward anyway.

For next year we have.

Oledski
Prior
Tetevano
Holroyd
Sangare
Walters
Mcdonnell

The Last two I think Smith sees as Props

Agree about the first 6 being props but McDonnell is definitely not the right size to play prop he’s built more like a slight lighter Sutcliffe.
Ben from Leigh could be another prop

We have completed the Signing of 19 year old Back rower Leon Ruan from Doncaster R.L.F.C. He came through the Wakefield Trinity academy and went too League 1 to develop more and earn first team rugby. Believe he has signed a 2 year deal from 2023 he looks to have great potential and fits Rohan Smith mold of the players he wants to bring into the club. The Signing should be announced in the next week or 2 I believe.

Interesting- we seem to be in for a few projects. This lad looks like he could turn into a prop for mine.

Some of these signings/potential signings seem to be about boosting the squad depth. I don't think Smith was at all happy to find out his reserves in some positions are 17/18 years old.

Someone mentioned Oledzki as pack leader. He might be in the sense of being a senior player but he's not a high impact prop, he's a grafter. He doesn't make big yards post contact and is stopped pretty easily most of the time. Nothing wrong with what he is but we need real size and aggression. Kasiano fell over the line against us last week just through sheer size. None of our props have a threat near the line, and none of our forwards look game to take on Walmsley on the rampage. That's where we're lacking, both in attack and defence - right up the middle.

Sangare could maybe become that player. Watching his stint for Toulouse last night he seems to be built right for it. However he'd need coaching to run lines and take the ball at pace, take it on more. Contact seemed strong in attack and defence.

Oledski makes plenty of yards post contact, problem is that he is surrounded by props who don't, therefore the opposition can really concentrate on defending him in numbers. Look, I'm sure that we'd all love a gigantic battering ram in the Walmsley mode, but who is the player and how much would he cost? Upwards of 300k at a conservative estimate. As for Kasiano, yes he's a threat, but he's also a defensive liability. I'd prefer a good stock of big props at reasonable value within the cap, and that's what I think Smith is going for.

When we've played Sts we've been wiped out up the middle - in the last game with Tet, Prior and Oledzki in the side. We won despite going backwards against Wigan and Cats (and also Warrington of all teams), which shows we have a plan, but its not one that will work every game or against all opponents. Let Sts make big yardage every set and you'll also most likely leak a lot of points.

I'm not saying we need Payne Haas or Kasiano (to choose extremes). I would hope that as part of a rotation though we could find a prop that could make a big difference. A Kylie Mk2 would be ideal.

This round of signing rumours is really interesting. It says to me that Smith backs his own coaching ability. It's what Powell managed to do at Cas around 17. Making the most out of a load of journeymen players and others with potential.

I think if you look at recent signings in SL history, players like Yates and Satae have been way way more effective than Tetavano despite not having 10% of his CV or reputation.

I'm up for recruiting smart rather than big names.

I'm not bothered if Smith goes for big names, journymen or young and upcoming talent. It is what he thinks he can work with, fit into his stratagies and mould into the team that he is creating. although Smiths resume is for lower tier in Aus he has shown an ability to maximise his resources. I'm more than interested to see if his ethos will work in SL
Edit
It is showing a lot of promise so far
