What is it with the Alan Smith love-in all of a sudden ? Just a reminder of AS quotes from back in 2004 :-

"People always say that Leeds United and Man United are big rivals but next year we are not even going to be in the same division so it's not even a rivalry. I'm not saying I want to walk out of here and go to Man United, but they're a massive club and I want to win trophies."

Now for Peter Lorimer's take on his transfer back in May 2004 :-

"LEEDS United director Peter Lorimer has told the *** that it was made clear to the club that Smith only wanted to join Manchester United

Officials insist that they have little option after the player's agent made it clear that Smith was only interested in moving across the Pennines.

Middlesbrough have tabled an £8m offer for Smith, but the 23-year-old insists a move to Manchester United would be the best way to further his England career."

All a little bit contradictory IMO, Smith left 5 years ago now & most of us should have got over i now - life goes on at a football club regardless of who leaves, scum fans will no doubt get over Ronaldo & Tevez when Micheal Owen starts banging the goals in. Probably the most galling thing about Smith moving there was seeing him kissing the badge when he scored, surely no true Leeds fan would ever do that regardless of how much ££ they were banking per week...

Well Lorimer at the time was never going to come out and say, " right we are s##t desperate for cash, so ive been on the blower to Alex Ferguson over at Man U this morning hawking Alan Smith to them so we can pay the bills" was he? He did what even the polititians do he buried the news under the inevitable backlash and furore keeping his gob shut for 5 years, cracking.

He's not that clever. He's just a puppet for whichever regime is in charge at the time, saying whatever he's being paid to say. It's a shame really seeing as he was an integral part of the Revie era.

It is strange as certain other Leeds players walzed off in the sunset with absolutley no comeback whatsoever Viduka for example albeit not the only player guilty of selling himself short as well of Leeds, is hailed, yet a home grown Leeds Utd player is vilified. Possibly because other players didn't proclaim to be Leeds through and through, selling an image of being this 'cut me and I bleed white' type of person (complete with smith17 clothing range in the shops) or being carried round the pitch by the fans after an appalling season as some kind of local hero then gesturing to fans at the next game when letting people know where he was going Gesture Go figure.
