| While not defending the performance yesterday (which for the record I thought was a marked improvement on last year for the first 15/20 mins actually before they got bullied and fell apart) you've surely got to let your first choice starting line up have a bit of a run of games before you start chopping and changing (aside from the enforced changes such as Hurrell). That Hull side was a bit of an unknown quantity yesterday. Most people expected us to be second best in the pack and we were. The other clubs will have been watching to get a gauge of where Hull are at. I actually felt we were a bit unlucky in the first half. Thought the first try should have gone up to the video ref for obstruction, wasn't at all convinced by Hick's decision on their second and the third was a great move on their part. Suddenly after a decent start we're on the back-foot, weather turned e and the game and the confidence were gone. I'd like to see how we go in the next few before starting to chop the team up. Week 1 is far too early to decide the 13 are terrible and changing everything in my opinion.
It's clear after the last two season's we've miles to go yet. For me all we can hope for is an improvement and seeing things moving in the right direction (which I'd have thought we can all agree has definitely been happening). If the overall league quality is as poor as it was last year we could sneak into the play-offs but there seems to be a lot of people with pretty short memories who think one or two signings are going to make us compete at the top.

| Quote RHINO-MARK="RHINO-MARK"We do need more depth and better quality in the starting 13.
Holdroyd will be better than Donaldson at prop Mcllellend cant be any worse than Lui & Ava was missed yesterday.'" You don't change your starting 6 after one game.Lui can play a lot better than he did yesterday. One of the worst players on the field for mine was Martin.

Think is though, Lui was really poor in the preseason games also.
I agree on Martin, but he did make a lot of tackles.
Dwyer should be nowhere near the team based on that defensive effort yesterday.

| Weren't there some rumours of some discontent with Lui over the close season? Hoping it was just a bad day at the office. Felt like Dwyer's predictable unpredictability yesterday was really jarring with Gale's attempts to bring some cohesion and control to the end of the sets. Was surprised it took another 10 mins or so after half time for him to swap him out for Myler. I can see Myler doing a really solid job at hooker alongside Gale and Lui with Dwyer being thrown on for impact - at least until Leeming is available. Do we have an eta on him?

Need to make sure they kick on the 5th more lacked that yesterday, kept running it on the last. We've got two decent kickers, we need to start using them.

That would still be 14 starters.

Lui is a very good player on his day. The pack is the big problem for us.

| It’s actually a couple of things, the front row and the way we play.
We potentially have two good props, an aging one who might still have some good days but is mostly ineffective these days, and some young players who lack the experience to be leaders. On top of that we’ve got a seasoned pro who’s on his way back from a long injury spell out. In terms of hooker we have just signed someone who might be good for us, we have another who is full of energy and enthusiasm but lacks control, direction, decision making and delivery. Then we’ve got a kid who could be a great success if handled correctly.
In terms of the style of play, we don’t play to our (limited) strengths. We should be playing with a bit more depth due to our lack of pace, and should be running more lines to move defenders around just before moving the ball. We’ve got one centre playing out of position on the wing, and the other playing some kind of hybrid prop role as we don’t have enough go forward.
There’s still a lot of work to do with the squad and coaching team, we need to be patient.
