Without doubt this current rhinos players squad is the weakest in the super league era. Over the last few seasons players have left or retired without any adequate replacements brought in. The big question is why have we arrived at this state of affairs. It certainly did not happen overnight, it’s been a gradual process. Maybe the senior club management have been preoccupied with the ground/stadium development. Certainly it’s been a major project and is still obviously ongoing. My main fear and concern is to build a decent team you need several quality players to be part of the team to build on. At the moment we don’t even have that group of players.

We do have some quality players. We also have a heap of average to poor ones. Without looking at BM for a second, in terms of recruitment I think we took a wrong turn by not adding a couple of players between 2016 and 2017. I know we won the comp that year, but in terms of the longer term its left us even more exposed this year and beyond. I've no doubt we would have won in 2017 if we'd got a couple of new players in.

As it is we've got a bunch of old, injury-prone and largely ineffective forwards who if they hadn't been at the club through major successes would struggle to get a game based on what they are actually doing on the field.

In terms of what we do on the field, I've no doubt BM will still be here next year. I just look at too many of our performances as being boring, lacking the most basic shape and worst of all, lacking energy. You could put videos up from our worst of 2016 and 2018 and it would be hard to tell which year was which.

Some of those players came out of retirement to represent us that season due to massive shortages. That was a year of adversity.

But you look at that squad and players when they were here in prime, and the following would walk into the current Leeds set up:

Faimalo, Fallon, Forshaw, Fozzard, Harmon, Hassan, Holroyd, Howard, Kemp, Hulme, Innes, Iro, Mann, Mcdermott, Mercer, Morely, Newton.

That's a full seventeen players there, that could replace players in our current first team squad who were better, than current. That kind of highlights what Super League has become these last few years.
