RFL statement tonight....

Following recent reports in the media, RFL Chief Executive Nigel Wood, said: "The RFL is extremely disappointed to learn that properly contracted Super League players may not be fulfilling the terms of their employment with Super League clubs as agreed. Contracts are two way commitments mutually binding on both parties. The RFL will support its member clubs absolutely to defend their contractual positions and will work with other similarly inclined Governing Bodies to ensure that the unacceptable potential anarchy of lawful contracts simply being walked away from, is not tolerated." - See more at: http://www.rugby-league.com/superleague ... sM8jd.dpuf

The RFL statement suggests this one won't be let go quietly (yet).

I wonder how much Segeyaro and Sandow are being guided in their statements by their respective agents, and how much they really are dead-set against coming back to the UK. If they are genuinely home sick and want to start up businesses etc in Australia then surely sitting out the remainder of their contracts won't be a big issue? And they wouldn't have any need for agents, or a need to pay them then...

As for Moon, I forget the exact circumstances, but wasn't Moon technically a free agent when he signed for Leeds? Salford's error was presumably not holding him to contract and granting him a release, otherwise they would have been entitled to a fee from Leeds? I can't imagine Leeds risking inducing Moon to break his contract, after all, he was never going to command a huge transfer fee.

Think that is correct, Leeds only stepped in once moon had declared he wanted to go home, think he could not get a deal in Aus so Leeds came in for him, all above board, not the sneaky poaching people are accusing Leeds off, Moon simply wanted out of what was a Car crash of a club pre koucash

Your job is to say to yourself on a job interview does the hiring manager likes me or not. If you aren't a particular manager's cup of tea, you haven't failed -- you've dodged a bullet.

Leeds can win a proper transfer fee and not just let him go for nothing because it prevents an awkward situation.

At the end of the day he's a contracted player, if a team wants a contracted player they pay a fee. Cronulla want to try and get away without paying one, it's that simple and just letting him go for nothing won't make us look understanding it'll make us look weak.

If he still had no offers from the NRL then he'd come back to Leeds, so that's exactly why we should ignore this homesickness BS and treat it for what it is, a player wanting to move clubs. If Watkins said tomorrow that he wants to join Warrington then should we just let him go for nothing? No not at all.

There's only one team likely to stop Segeyaro from joining Cronulla and that's Cronulla if they don't decide to pay for him.

What have Leeds done to deserve a transfer fee?

Have they invested in him, developed him through the academy - no they have pressured a player into signing a contract he didn't really want to. He helped them avoid the unthinkable - he owes the club nothing

IIRC, Moon took Salford to a RFL tribunal to try and gain a release from his contract. Moon lost and Leeds subsequently paid an undisclosed fee to Salford to acquire his services.

Leeds will no doubt get an 'undisclosed fee' for Segeyaro in due course just as they got for the contracted Craig Innes.

Oh boohoo. Poor old Segeyaro being bullied into signing things he doesn't want to by big bad Leeds. Honestly did you read that post back before submitting?

What are you even talking about? What pressure? There was one week left in the season, if he wanted to go because he was homesick then he wouldn't have signed.
He is only homesick because Cronulla have given him a better offer.

If he had broke his leg, would you say we owe him nothing and should be able to just ditch him?

Indeed. Leeds were very fair, they put the deadline in place but he had a fair few weeks before that to weigh up his options and Leeds also gave him the big extended break.

We have been Mugged off, simple as that.

Did James Segeyaro's agent tell you to say that, or was it someone at Cronulla Sharks?

Re: James Segeyaro : Tue Nov 29, 2016 11:55 pm
I'm glad the RFL is at least talking tough. I keep saying it, but the problem is players wanting to have their cake and eat it - contracts for as long a term as possible to insure their income, but wanting to be able to walk away from them as soon as they get a better offer. Its exactly the same rubbish Hardaker pulled.

If too many push down this line its the other players that will suffer, as there will literally be no point in clubs offering anything other than annual (or even shorter term) contracts.

IMO Leeds gave Segeyaro a pretty good deal - a contract for 2016 when he wasn't otherwise going to play, and a long-term offer with a free option for him to decide if he wanted it. These sorts of options are highly valued in business (and usually aren't free), and they always have a fixed term. Given the significant impact keeping or losing a high quality player has in a salary-capped sport, it was entirely reasonable for Leeds to ensure that the option lapsed well before the start of training for 2017.

Segeyaro wasn't strong-armed or pressured into signing anything. even if he never wanted to play in SL, at worst what Leeds offered him was a nice short contract to get him in the shop window, with the added bonus of a fall-back in the event he didn't get an NRL gig. The fact he didn't sort out a deal with the Sharks or anyone else before the option lapsed is entirely his problem.
