To give that some perspective, I attended a coaches session run by London Irish a while back. They go through video of the game and every tackle gets a score of 0-5. 0 is a miss, all the way through to 5 which is a turnover. The tackle objective at pro level Union is exactly the same as in league - to slow down the ruck speed so the defence can organise. A 1 on 1 side tackle that drops a player straight to the floor scores 1 - it's a defensive failure as usually the tackler is isolated and the ball can be recycled instantly. An upright wrap around and drive (preferably with more than one defender) that clamps the ball and pushes the player back scores a 3-4 depending on how long it takes the ball to be recycled. I think this video is aimed at kids and introducing them to the game - safety here is the initial priority. Hence all the stuff about getting your head on the right side etc. And some of us still get it wrong like I did on Saturday. |
