The postcode is a historical direction for mail to reach the local sorting office via a main sorting office and does not relate to the area the postcode is in. In the same way that a telephone dialing code relates to a telephone exchange.

Ilkley has an ls29 postcode yet is in the city of Bradford!

Tadcaster has ls24 postcode, is in selby district council area and in North Yorkshire. Do I win a prize for randomness? or is it a bit of a postcode lottery?

Sedbergh has an LA10 (Lancaster) postcode, is in South Lakes DC, Cumbria CC, and is in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
