Well that’s it isn’t it, like I say I’m no real fan of Powell but does he improve our current squad, yes he does.

Just to add, I remember not being particularly enthusiastic when we signed 33 year old Darryl Powell from Keighley back in 98. What a job he did for us! In order for us to clamber our way back up the slippery slope we are going to have to get lucky on a few signings. Not suggesting Sam has quite the same pedigree as Darryl did, but it would be a similar sort of move.

I never really rated Powell, but if we're looking for an experienced head that doesn't threaten the development of O'Connor and Johnson I could see this as a possibility. We'd have to go for real quality in other positions though.

Re: Johnson, I didn't see him in the Academy, what kind of player should we expect if he reaches his potential? Even more than O'Connor he seems on the small side for a forward, and I'm not sure he's ever shown a lot of pace coming out of DH either.

Johnson would have been first choice hooker now if he hadn’t have given the game up for two years, that’s set him back a lot IMO hes a few years behind where he should be.

Powell would give us some control at the ruck at least. I don't want to see us start 2024 with the JoC/CJ combi. Not saying they can't improve but they're too far off the required standard for regular first team rugby. Assuming our primary aim is to compete at the top end, that is.

Can't argue with the last bit. Though the words happy and powell don't sit easily in the same sentence under any circumstance.

From what I have seen of Sam Powell his distribution is one of his assets , he’s also a tough defender, he’s just not a flashy hooker.

He meets BatleyRhino's criteria of being good enough for one of Wigan, Saints or Catalans (well, this season at least).
