Might be wrong but don't think the club's insurance will cover injuries unless caused by the club's negligence. Would be surprised if the club has private medical insurance for the players. Would be cheaper just to pay for the operations.
They are still liable for his wages though if injured but suspect not turning up for work is probably a sackable offence (although player registration makes it more complicated). I don't think they should be allowing him to play unless there is something that we don't know about.

He's AWOL so assume we are not paying him as he's in breach of contract. If we are paying him we are even softer touch than everyone already thinks we are

From the tone of club statements I doubt that is the case. Little to no detail points to some legal involvement.

I have no info on this at all, but what if something is not right with his family and he’s not communicating with the club. Probably not the case but let’s not be too hard on a bloke who’s wife has just given birth eh lads?

I've no info either, just going by the tone of the statements from the club. He's playing for PNG which would be pretty odd if there was a family problem. My experience tells me the lack of detail from the club means legal involvement.

Does seem a bit odd that he's left Sydney to go Port Moresby to play in a rugby match if there was an issue.
There are loads of possible scenarios most likely being his wife was planning on coming over next season but has changed her mind. He would have been better advised not playing this weekend whatever the situation.

His wife was already here I think, she went home to have the baby.

Think we have to draw a line and move on. Any scenario where kids/spouse are in one hemisphere, and father is in the other, is doomed to fail. The challenge is to come up with a better centre than Nene. I think that's very do-able.
