Everyone is saying including myself how poor Ferres is. However when fit he was always on the team sheet. Agar and Sinfield clearly saw something in the man that all of us don't. This means that as we are either all better judges of players than either Agar or Sinfield or we are simply people who think we know more than the Coach but who don't really know what we are talking about. In other words if Ferres goes who will we get on the back of next, which player will it be, will it be Sutcliffe or someone else. Clearly our coaching staff don't know what they are doing especially if we give Ferres another contract. After all I say what a waste of money and space. Guys what do I know, maybe my brilliant coaching skills yet to be discovered makes me a better judge of a player than either Agar or Sinfield.
If Ferres is here and Merrin is gone come February, I'd wager Ferres will be captain. He's been given it on a few occasions over the last couple of years. As others have said, in the last 3 years when he's been fit the coaches have selected him so what do we know...?
It's all down to experience and a physical presence. Ferres is tough and sometimes he's been in weak sides - it's this rather than an outstanding playing ability which has seen him picked I think.

Or a more simpler and accurate view is that they were utilising what they had available, considering three replacements for him sat on the stands for most of the season. In a salary capped sport they can't just jump over the next in line and go further down the list. But now he is out of contract they are in a different position to be able to replace correctly. Failure to do that, then yes we would all be perfectly right to question their decision making.
Given backrow options of Ward, Martin, Mellor (one of SL top tacklers I think), Smith, Walters, Trout, and a replacement for Ferres even without JJB and Ablett, or a Merrin replacement, we have options. That also doesn’t include Mustapha.
Kids only progress by playing, including making mistakes.

I’d say Cuthbo could play 13 as well, maybe Peteru too at a push.
I do wonder whether Leeds are in a JP rut. We keep signing lanky players but they’re not fast and not big enough. JP was a bit of a one-off with his mental toughness and incredible engine. We have a lot of back rowers who like to play, and we need big bodies who will also take Route 1.
Agreed, what we have in the backrow will be fine if the front row takes us forwards. I’d say we have Ava who is good enough and Oledzki who will be but we miss two other first choice props. Perhaps one could be Crosby, but that’s a big risk, so we need one or two and Singleton, Cuthbertson (unless he plays 13) and Peteru need to be moved on quickly.
I’ve said a few times now, I’d have Isaac Luke for 2 years, and go get a bid metre English prop, preferably James Graham or Sam Burgess.
You can't say that last bit on here, it won't be understood. So many posters on here do not understand the concept that players can be brought in when under contract, we have been through this many times. Only players out of contract are what are considered as a potential to sign.
Exactly . Only Looking at the out of contract list for available players is a thing of the past, NRL clubs release players from contracts all the time. Just recently with Leeds... Merrin, Hurrell, Ava and Martin were all released early from contracts to take up the oppurtunity with us.
Who is only looking at off contract players? Leeds have repeatedly gone and got players, under contract or not. What a strange comment.
The bigger question in sport today is not if they are under contract but if they want to come. Despite legal status, contracts these days are only binding if a player wants them to be.
