Ah. I will take with a large heap of salt then. If true, I would say it was a strategic mistake. Whilst Whitbread is a good player and would undoubtedly improve our pack, it would mean using a valuable quota spot on one of the few positions where good English options are available at home (Eseh) and abroad (potentially Sutton/Burgess). In contrast where we'd find a home grown centre, or even worse halfback, of requisite quality is anybodies guess. The club has to get it right this year, and that means addressing our positional challenges as a whole. Just don't think that signing yet another Aussie/Kiwi prop is going to help. Fingers crossed that Davidson, as usual, is spouting garbage.

If we've used a quota spot on Whitbread then we must have a non quota centre lined up (Reece Lynn?)

If getting Croft meant we had to have Martin in at centre i'd take that personally. still think we're a top prop short...Tom Burgess please.

RS has an overstock of back rowers, couple of whom can cover centre. Will they take a risk on Simpson?

Buying an also-ran centre will annoy me a lot.

Leaving aside Martin's merits as a centre, the idea of moving him there on a permanent basis is fraught with risk. His centre partner is notoriously injury prone, and if Rhyse were to pick up an injury we'd be way short. Croft or another proper half back, by all means, but there has to be a balance.

McDonelll can cover centre a bit and we have Simpson. Jack Smith is close perhaps.

I’m not saying it’s ideal but we have Martin, Bentley, McDonnell, Goudemand, Gannon, Donaldson for 2 spots in the back row so RS may feel we can cover an injury or two. We could start with Martin/Newman as centres with Simpson to push Martin back into the second row on form maybe.

Anyway all this hinges on Whitbread signing - I can see the attraction because he can play a bit but we”ll see.
