The club messed up , he was not getting game time when lesser players were , very little to do with him not being local .

You can believe me or not, that’s up to you but I’m not going to divulge how I know as it was told to me in confidence. It was a significant upgrade on his contract and it was offered to him fairly early on in the season.

Would he have got more game time at Wigan at this stage if n his development? Doubt it very much.

Sam is from the NW originally and if Wigan offered him £20k more per year and getting closer to family, given that Leeds have been floundering, I’m guessing that’s what drove his decision.

So don’t criticise his non-selection to play given who was ahead of him at the time, but I do think he could have been tied up longer and earlier given his obvious potential.

We don’t know what his attitude is like around the club and he isn’t the brightest spark on his social media etc so maybe there was more going on, as usual, than any of us know.

Come on Jim, cant have it all ways, if he was an attitude risk we wouldnt have offered him the very fair contract offer Christopher says we offered

We've also just signed the biggest on field idiot in super league for another 2 year so not being the brightest spark clearly dosnt put us off.

Do i believe we offered Walters an increase on his previous deal - 100%

Do i beieve we offered him an offer fair to how we rated him at the time of the offer - 100%

Do i believe the club would do things differently if they had their time back - 100%

Where we have messed up is that we have not rated him highly enough at the time of the offer, we have not identified his potential or projected his subsequent performance well enough, thats poor by the club, they should be well ahead of Wigan on that, they should be a million miles ahead of supporters on that, but they were not.

Wigan were willing to pay for one of the best young forwards in the british game, which is what they are getting, we were wanting to pay for a good squad player, that, imo, is where we went wrong

I think some really need to move on from this, he’s gone, will it be a mistake, probably yes, we aren’t the inly club that will regret not retaining players.

Some? I think everyone needs to move on, for every comment about losing Walters being a mistake, usually after another good performance by him, theres just as many jumping to tell us the club Couldn't of done any more

The club could have done more to keep him, but they didn’t do nothing to keep him. And if what I was told is correct we weren’t that far off with the offer we made.

He isn’t a Rhinos player anymore and unfortunately that’s that, theres not much more to be said is there.

Walters has huge potential, but he's not there yet. Quite possibly he'll come back to haunt us, but who knows. We have some good young forwards already and we need to do what we haven't for years, which is make sure they maximise their potential. Holroyd in many ways is a more natural prop in terms of build, I think the length of the season caught up with him, he almost doubled his career appearances in one season this year. He and Oledzki can and should do better next season.
