Also, definitely possible for a player to be a marquee for only one year. Suppose player A is non Home Grown and earning 250k in year 1 he is announced as a marquee signing. At the end of the year, home grown player B signs a new contract for 175k, using, for example an increase in the Salary Cap (as has happened this year). It would be more beneficial to the club to use the marquee rule on Player B rather than Player A (by 25k) so would switch to use the marquee position for player B. Whilst clubs cannot hide this (the rules clearly state they have to disclose their marquees) that doesn't mean they have to publicly announce it.

Out if interest did Saints use Marquee ruling this year?

The reality is likely that you put your two highest paid players down as marquee but really it just should be anyone on more than the £150k they go down as (think that is the right figure currently) so you are all kind of correct.
The other point I think being made is that by nominating marquee players the inference is that they are on more money and therefore more valuable to the team and could in turn create dressing room disharmony. I've no idea of this is the reality in dressing rooms but if some players do get their knickers in a twist over this they should either get better or get out the dressing room.
If people are concerned about the impact of Merrins remuneration then they must be having convulsions at what SBW will be on!
You’d have to think of logical terms on it however. EG Hurrell could be on 225k whereas Gale could be on 200k, in terms of the salary cap marquee exemptions, Hurrell would class as 50k exempt, whereas Gale would class as 75k exempt, so it doesn’t always have to be the highest earners. It’s more about the most cost effective.
Yes you are wrong on that. Completely wrong. You’d have to drastically reduce their salary to do that, and breach their contract!
Christopher is right, you are completely, spectacularly wrong. The club can nominate whichever 2 players they want to be the Marquee. Merrin or Hurrells salary wouldnt be reduced if they wernt nominated as marquee, it would just mean there full salary would count against the cap.
Seems Gotcha was correct, Supporting Leeds since the 90's clearly hasnt gave you the understanding of the cap you thought you had.

Think about this logically bud. You’ve signed 2 players on £300k/year on 3 year contracts. And declared them as Marquee so only £150k each counts on the cap. Then after 1 year you decide you want another player/s as Marquee. You would then have to count their full salaries, meaning your actual salary cap is unmanageable for a squad game. So in reality you are stuck with these two players as Marquee signings for the three years, unless you can persuade them to take a drastic pay cut, as well as not being Marquee. Which you could not enforce as that’s a breach of contract, and they’re not going to agree to that are they? So yes in theory in our club you could change the Marquee player, but in reality you can’t unless one of them decides to leave (As Merrin almost did). But isn’t the fact no one in Oz was prepared to offer anything near his wage telling us something about the UK Marquee system? I’m not trying to upset anyone but things in reality are different to what we can be led to believe..... Peace out all

You havnt had a Logical thought since you appeared bud. If Leeds decided to sign a player on more money than Hurrell for example, they could choose to nominate that player as marquee instead of Hurrell if they wanted to, Hurrells full salary would then count full against the cap, he wouldnt be forced to take a pay cut, the club would just have to have enough cap space to accomodate it, but thats just common sense and shouldnt need highlighted. Everybodys tried to explain it to you, unsuccessfuly it appears. Its very simple...Your not stuck to the same 2 players as Marquee for every year of there contract, you can designate whoever you want to class as marquee as to how it best benefits your squad, Frosties gave another example with Luke Gales situation with his home grown/ england international cap exemptions.

Spot on. And as others have said, this is only 3 years old so not sure what the 90s have to do with it.
To pick up your point about disharmony in the group, I personally don’t think this has anything to do with the marquee rule. I get the impression Merrin and hurrell are much loved by the squad. And I’d go as far as saying Merrin is currently the most important player in our team.
Put it like this, I don’t think the Toronto players will be moaning about their latest marquee signing.

Exactly, last year Toronto had two marquee players in Leutele and Lussick, obviously one of them changes now with SBW (I’d expect that to be Lussick knowing Leutele earns 500k p/a).
No worries at all. I’m bowing out. The blinkered approach doesn’t really work, and is probably indicative of why the club avoided relegation by the skin of their teeth, despite cheating the cap! let’s see what next season brings . Let’s hope to enjoy some more entertaining rugby, and best wishes to you all.
