Tbh - I always thought he'd move on at some point in the season unless injuries meant he was getting a decent run in the side. He was well down the half back pecking order and battling it out for reserve full back with Edgell. Surprised it's happened this quick though. Let’s hope it's indicative of another big move in the transfer market, hopefully a prop.

I thought Myler would be happy to take a back seat this season as cover and see out his contract.
I assume he wants to be first choice so fair play.

I also assume of the club have let him go, or looked to move him on that ots for a good reason and they are looking at a prop or someone else equivalent to Myler.

If we are looking to offload Olpherts as well you would anticipate somebody coming in who can cover wing and fullback. RS may think that's Handley.
It might also be a steer that we are going to play a different way and the system requires a running FB which is not Myler game. Whatever the reasons good luck to Myler as his own performance levels last couple of seasons have been consistent in a very up and down few years for the club.

Depends how much we are saving, but generally I think this is very good business from us.
We have edgell and lumb in the squad, no point having them in the squad if they aren’t able to offer some back up when required.
We also have sinfield and the ability for miller to step up into half back if required.

I saw a comment about how often our 1,6 and 7 played. Well there is no reason to think Croft, miller ans Frawley won’t play, better ages and injury records than previous players in those positions.

If we can shift Olpherts I wouldn’t be surprised to see a fullback, winger option signed along with another prop. Ideally Sutton and then somebody else who can cover a few positions in the backfield.

This makes sense to me, Myler is a solid player but RS clearly doesn’t rate him at HB and has signed 2 other FBs with Myler here… he must think it’s time to give youth a go at FB if needed as cover, and Myler will be great at FB for York as first choice.

Richie himself may have requested release, but it does also look like the club is trying to make more cap space for more signings.

Best of luck to Richie. He converted to fullback as well as could have been hoped, and his style of play could really help a Championship team, as he just adds that extra bit of polish out wide.

I wonder if Hooley might have stayed if he knew Myler was going? Its a pretty big step to have Edgell as first reserve given he hasn't played a first team game there yet.

Thing is RS is damned if he does or doesn’t give youth a chance. We have several good young players looking for a place in the team, we need to get the balance right. Myler will make a better first choice Championship fullback rather than a season long reserve at Leeds.

Also if we need the cash to sign a decent prop you can’t have your cake and eat it, we have to balance the squad.

Also the player himself may well have wanted out because he’ll want to play first grade.

Great move all round. Richie will be a great signing for York. He would obviously not wanted to be a bit part at this stage of his career. Been a good player for The Rhinos and I wish him well.
Obviously this frees up quite a chunk of cap space which we should spend on a big line busting prop. If Olpherts moves on then we need more cover on the outside back position. If he stays then we are covered with two or three youngsters able to give cover at fullback and halfback giving them a chance to prove they are up to the mark without being just dropped in it.
If we make a decent signing up front then I don’t think we could expect more from this years recruitment. I for one am looking forward to a much improved season, roll on Feb/March 2024.

I wonder if they couldn't confirm the Hudson signing until Myler was confirmed as off the cap/mostly off the cap. If so the available cap space might be tighter than we would have hoped.

But they didnt know myler was moving on til very recently. Surely they weren't keeping Hudson hanging on til they could shift someone? And Hudson can't be on much over 30k.
