It does make sense if its cleared enough to bring in Hudson. No idea if we're that tight but I wouldn't underestimate the impact Ackers signing had on our cap position. He won't have been cheap and was probably not accounted for in planning. Frankly we don't know what Miller et al are on, its quite possible we are really tight now.

It might also prevent us doing a deal for Kershaw. We cannot force Olpherts to go, there's no reason he would or should accept a pay cut, and any club thinking about him would know we are trying to get rid and would want us to pay as much of his salary as possible. Just because we as fans (or the club) might want this to happen doesn't mean it will automatically.

Donaldson/Bentley seem to fit far less well as you say.

Given we had a deal to sign Levi in place (until he gave back on his verbal commitment) then it’s clear we were always in the market for an upgrade at Hooker and I assume Levi would have cost more in wages to bring him over compared to Ackers?

I would say if the squad stays as it is and there is in fact no more incomings then i would downgrade the recruitment score from being 9/10 to 8/10. Still very good but still a tad short imo. We're short at FB cover and quality depth at Prop.

With some luck on the injury front we should be good enough for top 4. But I'm confused how we can unexpectedly release Myler and are spent up? .Myler was in Smiths plans unless that changed when Croft came available.. time for Peter Smith to earn his wages and get the correct story here..

It always frustrates me that they come up with half a story. If GH is saying no more space, the obvious question is: Was Myler's departure necessary to make us cap compliant.

Yep, Peter should have followed that up with his thoughts and saying he is contacting the club for further details etc.

Leaving an awful lot to chance with myler being under contract. Don't see it myself

Only the people in the know at the club can say if they have cap left or not. There have been plenty of signings including some real big ones which will be far from cheap.
In regards to Myler at his age he probably wants regular football and if that means dropping to the championship and being a big cog then it might have appealed. However he will have been on a biggish contract and one that York could not probably match. GH might have thought he was earning too much not to be a regular. Therefore and it’s only conjecture that we are paying some of his wage or gave him a golden goodbye either way it would mean that we have not freed up as much as you might think.

Say Myler was on £80k. We pay £40k next year, York pay £40k, he’s on the same and will play, we get £40k to bring in Hudson. (I don’t know the real numbers, but the announcements were essentially at the same time).

Same might be the case with Olpherts - even if we pay part salary it may just be enough with what we have left to bring in Kershaw.

I know Myler was a decent player I could just see scenarios where he wouldn’t play a single game of first grade next year.

I think GH is right and we are at the cap so it’s one out-one-in from here unless we find exempt players. Unless they have one final magical Xmas present up the sleeve and Sutton is on his way. Who knows.
